Bet Of The Day May 22

The French Open first round match between Fabio Fognini and Alexei Popyrin features as’s best bet for Sunday May 22.

Bet Of The Day May 22 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.

Key Betting Points

  • Fognini won the only previous meeting between the pair 6-2 6-4
  • Popyrin has lost nine of his 12 matches at tour-level this season
  • Popyrin has lost his last three matches at Roland Garros
  • Popyrin failed to cover the +3.5 games line in all three of those defeats
  • Fognini has won 23 of his 35 matches at Roland Garros throughout his career
  • Fognini has covered the -3.5 games line in all 10 of his R1 wins at Roland Garros

We’re off to Day 1 of the French Open for today’s best bet as mercurial Italian talent Fabio Fognini takes on the struggling Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

Fognini is one of the world’s best players on clay when he’s motivated and there’s no bigger tournament on the surface than Roland Garros.

Capable of some absolutely breathtaking tennis when he’s in the mood, Fognini has made the quarter-finals in Paris before and famously won the biggest title of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters a few years ago, defeating Rafael Nadal along the way.

Fognini has been unsurprisingly up and down this clay swing, but he did make the Belgrade semi-finals and pushed Jannik Sinner in Rome, so his lead-in form is decent enough.

The Italian has a favourable opening round draw against Popyrin, who has barely won matches on the main tour in 2022.

Much has been expected of Popyrin since he burst onto the scene as a teenager, but he just hasn’t been able to deliver and a change of coaches this season hasn’t helped him at all.

Popyrin is dismal 3-9 at tour-level this season and was forced to drop down to Challenger level in order to restore some confidence this clay swing.

The Aussie has only won one match at Roland Garros in his career and that was his first ever match at the tournament back in 2019. Popyrin has since lost his last three matches in Paris in straight sets, failing to cover the +3.5 games handicap in all three.

With Fognini winning their only previous meeting 6-2 6-4 on hardcourt, we’re confident the Italian can cover the -3.5 games line on his favourite surface.
