We’re off to ATP Washington for today’s best bet as Juncheng Shang and Emilio Gomez square off for a place in the second round.
There’s a huge gulf in form and class between these two players. Shang is rising quickly up the rankings and looks to be on his way to the top 50 within the next six months. Gomez meanwhile is a journeyman and currently operating at No. 139 in the world at 31 years of age.
We’ll be backing Shang to win this match in straight sets.
The Chinese player resides in Florida and has competed in the States for years. He loves these conditions and impressed last week in Atlanta, qualifying for the main draw and beating Ben Shelton in straight sets before falling to Kei Nishikori.
Shang has won five of his last six matches, with seven of his last eight victories coming in straight sets. When he wins, Shang usually does it convincingly.
Gomez meanwhile is in terrible form, coming into this clash having lost nine of his last 12 matches.
The Ecuadorian last competed in a Challenger in his home country last week, suffering a straight sets loss to World No. 275 Omar Jasika. Not exactly coming in hot here.
When Gomez loses, he usually doesn’t put up much of a fight either – 12 of his last 14 defeats have come in straight sets.
These two have already met two times previously on tour, with Shang winning both in straight sets.
Shang is the player in far superior form right now and he’s destined for big things – confident the 18-year-old gets the job done in straight sets.
