We’re off to the Monte Carlo Masters for today’s best bet as rising Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina squares off against Aussie star Alex de Minaur in the opening round.

Normally de Minaur would be the heavy favourite in this match-up, but not on clay. The Aussie has struggled on this surface since transitioning to the main tour and currently has a dire 2-11 record.

Indeed, de Minaur has won just one match on clay since the start of the 2019 season and his last outing on the surface at the 2020 French Open saw him lose to Marco Cecchinato in straight sets, while he also copped a bagel for his troubles.

De Minaur started the season strongly on hardcourt as he picked up the Antalya title, but he’s struggled since the Australian Open, losing four of his last five matches – including an opening round exit to Daniel Elahi Galan in Miami.

Meanwhile, Davidovich Fokina has put together a solid season to date and has won at least one match at every tournament he’s played so far in 2021.

The 21-year-old has won four more matches on clay than de Minaur despite spending far shorter time on tour and has compiled a very solid 26-14 record on the surface at Challenger level.

Davidovich Fokina also beat de Minaur in their only previous meeting on clay at the 2019 Lisbon Challenger.

The Spaniard is the better player on this surface and de Minaur has little to no confidence at the moment. This should be a pretty routine victory for Davidovich Fokina.
