We head to the MCG for a blockbuster clash between Geelong and Melbourne as round 8 of the AFL season continues on Saturday evening. Our best bet at Bettingpro.com.au for Saturday May 4 is in this game.
Bet Of The Day May 4 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.
Key Points
- The average total points scored between these two teams in their last two encounters is 147.5
- Geelong is undefeated in season 2024 with a record of 7-0.
- Geelong has won 15 of their last 20 games at the MCG including six of their last eight against Melbourne.
- The Cats have won their last eight straight first halves.
- Melbourne has averaged 83.5 points per game in season 2024 so far.
- The average total points scored in Melbourne’s last five games has been 145.2.
- Geelong and Melbourne are two teams that have not only been a constant in the top four in recent years but have both won premierships.
And they have had some excellent, tight fought contests during this period.
Who could forget Zach Tuohy’s goal after the siren in round 18, 2018 to give the Cats the win or Max Gawn with another post game kick to win it for Melbourne in round 23, 2021?
The Cats continue to defy the unwritten rule that every team must bottom out and miss finals for a number of years to give everyone else a turn, much to the despair of the rest of the competition and its supporters.
After missing finals in 2023 they are now the only undefeated team in the competition and have put themselves in an excellent position yet again.
They have an even spread of young and old talent and are not reliant upon a few to do the work which is evident by the fact that not one player this season has recorded 30 disposals in a match.
In my opinion, they have the best player in the game right now in Jeremy Cameron who has not only kicked the fourth most goals in the comp (2.7 pg) but also gets plenty of the football averaging over 18 disposals per game.
Melbourne’s best football is still very good but we have seen inconsistencies with losses to Sydney in the opening round and another to the out of form Brisbane Lions in Melbourne.
They play a keepings off style of football and remain one of the best teams in the competition in forcing their opponent to kick long where they intercept and turn the football back over.
I’m expecting a low scoring game where Geelong will again find a way to win with no real standout and plenty of contributors across the board.
