UFC 301 takes place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil this Sunday afternoon and the co-main event will see a farewell fight for Brazilian Jose Aldo as he takes on Jonathan Martinez.
Bet Of The Day May 5 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.
Key Points
- Jose Aldo has won three of his last four fights in the UFC
- After his first MMA loss Aldo was undefeated for over a decade and won 18 straight fights
- Six of Jose Aldo’s last eight wins have been by decision
- 12 of his 17 career KO wins have been in the first round
- Aldo has a career takedown defence of over 90% and stuffed every one of Merab Dvashvili’s 16 attempts in their fight.
Jose Aldo is regarded by most as the greatest UFC featherweight of all time and this was solidified somewhat when he was entered into the UFC Hall Of Fame earlier this year.
He had three successful defences of his featherweight title in the WEC before it merged with the UFC where he racked up another seven.
After two losses to Max Holloway and then one to Alex Volkanovski he moved down the Bantamweight and fought for the vacant title against Petr Yan, a fight he lost late in the final round.
The Brazilian legend was then well on his way to another title shot with three wins in a row against Chito Vera, Pedro Munhoz and Rob Font before losing a very tight and controversial decision to Merab Dvashvili prompting his retirement from the sport.
He has decided to have a send off fight in front of his home crowd and it would take a brave man to bet against a guy with so much heart, tenacity and experience in his home country.
The fact we are getting the price we are seems a gift and I expect him to out point his opponent through three rounds.
