Round nine of the AFL season kicks off at the MCG between two old rivals in Melbourne and Carlton and that is where our best bet of the day comes.
Bet Of The Day May 9 – read on below for our reasoning behind today’s best bet.
Key Points
- The last six straight games between Melbourne and Carlton has gone under the total match points line
- Melbourne’s last four straight games have gone under 165.5 total points
- These two teams have kicked 166 or less points in two of their last three games against each other.
- Melbourne have had the least amount of points scored on them during season 2024 so far.
- The last four games between Melbourne and Carlton has been decided by an average of seven points
- The last five straight Carlton games have been decided by a margin of 19 points or less.
Another cracking contest at the MCG to start the round and this time it’s between old rivals Melbourne and Carlton.
The Dees got the biggest scalp of their season last Friday night when they allowed the previously unbeaten Geelong to score just 66 points in their eight point win.
They rank first in points against throughout the season thanks to their pressure and contested football abilities.
Steven May (who had 25 disposals and 10 marks against Geelong) and Jake Lever (24 and eight) continue to be rock solid in defence, setting themselves in perfect position to intercept mark should teams be forced to kick long down the line.
And if there is one flaw in Carlton’s style of play, it is that they consistently throw the footy on the boot without a target in mind.
The Blues suffered back to back losses for the first time in their season when they lost to Collingwood in a nail biter last week, and this was on the back of a disappointing 15-point loss to Geelong the week previous.
They have welcomed the return of star midfielder Sam Walsh who again had plenty of the football in their loss to the Pies but they now sit just inside the top eight through eight rounds.
This is another difficult game to pick from a head to head perspective as the market suggests, but I’m confident this will be another tight, low scoring contest.
