DOMINIC THIEM VS ANDREY RUBLEV with bet365.com.au – Odds correct at time of writing
Thiem may have already secured his ticket to the ATP Finals semi-finals and Rublev has already been eliminated following a 0-2 record, but I’m backing the Russian home in this one.
It’s a familiar position for Thiem, who played a similar ‘dead rubber’ last year at the ATP Finals to Matteo Berrettini, losing in straight sets as he understandably preserved energy for the knockout stages.
I think we can expect the same outcome on Thursday. Rublev is a better player than Berrettini and will be determined to get his maiden win at the season-ending championships after a one-sided loss to Rafael Nadal and a heartbreaking deciding-set tiebreak defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Rublev has been one of the best players of this disrupted season, leading the ATP with a whopping five titles. Since the tour restart, the 23-year-old has won titles in Hamburg, St. Petersburg and Vienna, while he’s also made major quarter-finals at the US Open and Roland Garros.
Furthermore, Rublev has won his last two matches against Thiem, including a straight sets triumph in the Austrian’s home city of Vienna last month – which was also played indoors.
Thiem is coming off one of the best matches of the year after edging Nadal in two tiebreaks – and having already qualified for the semi-finals, we can expect a letdown. This is a great chance for Rublev to get on the board and he’s solid value to do so.
Key Points
- Rublev has won the last two matches between the pair
- Rublev won 7-6 6-2 in indoor conditions last month in Vienna
- Thiem has already qualified for the semi-finals
- Thiem lost to Berrettini in a similar dead rubber scenario at the ATP Finals last year
- Rublev leads the ATP with five titles won in 2020
