We’re off to the Rome Masters for today’s best bet as Andrey Rublev and Roberto Bautista Agut renew their rivalry with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.
Rublev and Bautista Agut are locked at 3-3 in their H2H, but the Russian has the edge on clay having won their previous two matches on the surface in Hamburg last year and Monte-Carlo just last month.
Rublev won that Monte-Carlo showdown 7-6(2) 5-7 6-3 and I’m predicting a similarly competitive contest playing out in the Italian capital today.
Both men have been in superb form this season. Rublev holds a 28-7 match record, including a title in Rotterdam and runner-up showing in Monte-Carlo, while he’s made at least the quarter-finals in all but one tournament in 2021.
Bautista Agut is 18-11 and has been in great form so far this week in Rome, recording straight sets victories over Tommy Paul and Cristian Garin.
However, Bautista Agut has yet to make it beyond the Round of 16 at any clay event this season, and coupled with his 0-2 record vs Rublev on the clay, this makes the Russian the slight favourite.
In saying that, we can expect a three-setter or lengthy two-setter. Rublev has seen over 21.5 games in four of his last five matches, while the last meeting between the pair in Monte-Carlo saw Rublev prevail in three sets.
It promises to be a close clash, but Rublev holds the edge on clay and has been the slightly better player all year – expect the Russian to come away with the win and over 21.5 games.
- Rublev is 2-0 over Bautista Agut on clay
- Rublev has seen over 21.5 games in four of his last five matches
- Bautista Agut has seen over 21.5 games in three of his last four matches
- Rublev beat Bautista Agut 7-6(2) 5-7 6-3 on the clay of Monte-Carlo last month
- Bautista Agut hasn’t been past the R16 on clay this season
