Rafael Nadal vs Karen Khachanov Prediction & Preview

Former Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal goes in search of a place in the fourth round when he meets the powerful Karen Khachanov on Friday.

Nadal has flown under the radar in the build-up to the Australian Open, but all of a sudden the Spaniard has a chance to move past Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and make it to 21 slams if he can emerge triumphant in Melbourne.

The 2009 champion has struggled at the Australian Open over the last few years, but he’s looking good in 2022 and comes into this clash on the back of a six-match winning streak after winning the Melbourne Summer Classic title.

Nadal hasn’t dropped a set in routine wins over Marcos Giron and Yannick Hanfmann so far this week, but things should get a bit tougher in the third round on Friday.

Khachanov hasn’t really progressed as perhaps many thought he would after he burst onto the scene and subsequently won the Paris Masters title, beating Novak Djokovic in the final.

The Russian has stagnated over the last couple of seasons and came into this tournament ranked No. 30 in the world. Khachanov reached a career-high ranking of No. 8 after making the French Open quarter-finals in 2019, but apart from a quarter-final at Wimbledon last year, the 25-year-old hasn’t made much of an impact on tour.

Khachanov also has a poor record against Nadal, losing all seven of their previous encounters. If he couldn’t beat him at his peak, Khachanov most likely can’t do it now, even if Nadal has declined slightly as well.

Some close sets should be expected – this is Nadal’s first real challenge of the summer and they’ve played a tiebreak in five of their seven matches, while their US Open match a few years ago was extremely tight. But when all is said and done, Nadal knows how to win this match-up and he will probably do so again in Melbourne.
