Two of boxing’s greatest competitors will have an exhibition bout with Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr meeting at the Dignity Health Sports Park in California on November 28.
Former undisputed heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson steps into the squared circle against former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. See below for Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr tips.
Road To Tyson vs Jones Jr
Both men are two of the biggest names in boxing and they were prestigious champions at their peak. Now they look to get back into the limelight with this exhibition bout in California. Tyson is a former WBA, WBC, IBF and The Ring heavyweight champion. He retired in 2005 following a sixth-round retirement defeat against Kevin McBride. ‘Iron Mike’ retired with a professional boxing record of 50 wins, six losses and two no contests. Roy Jones Jr was a former four-weight champion as he won titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. His last fight wasn’t that long ago, back in 2018 with a unanimous decision over Scott Sigmon for the vacant WBU cruiserweight title. So how did this fight come about? Tyson uploaded videos of his work outs to social media and that led to discussion about Tyson potentially fighting former AFL forward Barry Hall, former NRL player Paul Gallen or current Sydney Roosters forward Sonny Bill Williams. Nothing eventuated on the trio before Tyson vs Evander Holyfield was thrown up as a potential idea. Once again, nothing eventuated, and Tyson’s camp took aim at Jones Jr. Originally slated for September 12, the fight was pushed back to November 28 to help gain more revenue. It will be an eight-round bout at heavyweight. At this weight division, Tyson has the experience, but let’s not forget that Jones Jr defeated John Ruiz to become WBA heavyweight champion. He then immediately moved back down to the light heavyweight division.
Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr Tips: Fighter Predictions
Mike Tyson: “Changing the date to November 28th will give more people the opportunity to see the biggest comeback in boxing history. This temporary inconvenience will last longer than Roy Jones Jr. He better be ready, I’m coming full force.”
Roy Jones Jr: “For me, I know how to have fun in the ring and try to make it the best that I can make it. But at the same time, Mike knows one way. It’s like playing with a pit bull pup. He’ll play, but he’ll get lost because all he knows is [to] go at it. So that’s all Mike knows – go at it. So, I’ve got to be prepared for whatever Mike comes out with. Now, I want to box, have a good time and give people a good show, as well. But Mike ain’t ordinary. He’s not that person that can go out and do that. All he knows is to take your head off.”
Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr Tips, Predictions & Preview
If both fighters were in their prime, Tyson would be too powerful for Jones Jr at heavyweight level. Both men are over 50 years old now, but they do look to be in good condition. Jones Jr should be the fitter man, having only retired a couple of years ago compared to Tyson who has been out of the ring for more than a decade. Tyson could come out all guns blazing in search for an early knockout. With the bout being over eight rounds, the longer this fight lasts, it should favour Jones Jr. There is every chance this could be one fight too many for Tyson who may be regretting coming out of retirement. It is one thing to look good in the gym but an entirely different one to absorb punches from a former four-division champion. We’d love to see Tyson come back with a victory, but we are backing Jones Jr to take this one on points.
