UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs Burns Tips, Predictions and Preview

Trent Orwin:
UFC Fight Night Woodley Burns

UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs Burns will be held at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 31 at 11am AEST.

The main event is a Welterweight bout between former UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Gilbert Burns.

Here are our best bets for UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs Burns.

Tyron Woodley vs Gilbert Burns

Woodley fights for the first time since March 2, 2019, where he lost his belt to Kamaru Usman by unanimous decision. It was completely one-sided with Usman landing 336 strikes and two takedowns compared to Woodleyโ€™s 60 strikes.

Forward pressure is key to fighting Woodley and if Burns can get the former champ on the backfoot, then he could end up victorious over Woodley.

Burns averages 2.6 takedowns per 15 minutes but Woodley has excellent takedown defense at 92% according to ufc.com. He has never been submitted and only knocked out once.

Dan Hooker knocked out Burns at UFC 226 in the first round and Woodley hits hard. His counter-striking ability will try to keep Burns at bay and with seven knockout wins to his name, Woodley looks value to add an eighth to his career tally.

We are happy to take the option that also includes a submission victory or DQ as the odds are about the same as other books that have just KO/TKO.

Katlyn Chookagian vs Antonina Shevchenko

A Womenโ€™s Flyweight bout set to take part during the prelims sees the 13-3 Katlyn Chookagian fight against the 8-1 Antonina Shevchenko, the sister of the reigning UFC Womenโ€™s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Chookagian had a shot at Valentinaโ€™s title but was ultimately stopped in the third round via TKO.

Prior to that loss, Chookagian had earned unanimous decision wins over Jennifer Maia and Joanne Calderwood.

Shevchenko comes off a submission victory against Lucie Pudilova. She lost via split decision leading up to that fight against Roxanne Modafferi.

Chookagian is ranked #2 and looks value as the underdog in the fight against the #12 ranked Shevchenko. We expect this fight to go to the judgeโ€™s scorecards where โ€œBlonde Fighterโ€ can get the nod.
