Round 18 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Friday July 19 when the Adelaide Crows host Essendon at the Adelaide Oval.

First bounce is at 7.50pm AEST or 7.20pm ACST and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

The two sides registered important wins in Round 17 and find themselves among a host of sides that are attempting to sneak into the final eight with six weeks remaining in the regular season.

Adelaide dismantled the hapless Gold Coast Suns by 95 points last weekend and heading into the current round they are 7th on the ladder. Essendon claimed a thriller over North Melbourne by five points and find themselves in 8th spot.

Both sides have registered a total of nine wins this season and a victory is crucial for their respective finals hopes. Adelaide have been posted as the favourites in the early head to head betting.

The two sides rank similarly in a number of areas. The Crows average slightly more disposals this season. Matt and Brad Crouch are likely to find plenty the ball in the middle of the ground, while Rory Atkins and Rory Laird will set things up from the backline.

The Crows also have a number of scoring options up forward. Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins combined for 10 goals last weekend but consistency has been an issue.

Essendon's ballwinners include Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel, while Anthony McDonald Tipungwuti will be out to continue his good form after booting four goals last weekend, including the match winner in the last 30 seconds of the game.

Selection News

Adelaide's Tom Lynch is edging closer to a return from injury but the Crows aren't expected to make too many changes after their dominant performance over the Gold Coast.

Essendon lose Michael Hurley to a shoulder injury. Dyson Heppell remains on the sidelines. David Myers and Josh Begley are among those with form in the VFL.

Match Odds

Adelaide Crows $1.45
Essendon $2.62

* correct at the time of writing

The two sides have not met since Round 1 of 2018 and on that occasion it was Essendon by 12 points at Marvel Stadium. In that game the Bombers piled on six goals to one in the last term to prevail and it was Dyson Heppell and David Zaharakis that combined for 70 disposals.

Prior to that, Adelaide won their past four against Essendon with those wins coming at a whopping average margin of 75 points. Two of those games were at the Adelaide Oval. Essendon have not defeated the Crows at the venue, however, they were victorious against Port Adelaide at the ground in Round 23 of 2018.

Prediction and Tips

Adelaide will need to be at their best against a Bombers outfit that have found a way to win in recent weeks. But with the home ground advantage, the Crows look to be the play here.
