After a stunning season from that saw him claim the Brownlow Medal Hawthorn's Tom Mitchell has been installed as the $7 favourite with sportsbet to repeat the dose in 2019.

Mitchell, who became Hawthorn's first Brownlow Medalist since Shane Crawford in 1999, snared the prestigious award this year by claiming 28 votes, four clear of Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom on 24, while Melbourne's Angus Bradshaw surprised many by polling 21 and finishing 3rd.

The ball magnet, Mitchell, picked up a swag of other awards in the process, including the AFLPA MVP as well as the Hawthorn best and fairest and a number of media awards. He picked up 848 disposals in 2018, averaging over 35 per game and had 40 or more touches in 11 games, including a record 54 in Round 1.

Mitchell's major rivals in the market are Dustin Martin, Nathan Fyfe and Patrick Dangerfield. In 2017, Martin became the first player in the history of the game to claim the Brownlow/Norm Smith/Premiership treble in a single season, polling a staggering 36 votes on Brownlow Medal night in 2017, three more than Patrick Dangerfield, who was ineligible that year.

Geelong's Dangerfield won the Brownlow in 2016 and polled 17 votes this season, two behind the 6th placed Martin on 19. Nathan Fyfe missed seven games in 2018 yet still managed to rack up 15 votes. The Fremantle midfielder won the award in 2015.

If history is a guide, Mitchell may find it difficult to go back to back next season, while Martin, Dangerfield and Fyfe also have odds against them. The last player to win back to back Brownlow Medals was Robert Harvey in 1997/1998, while Gary Ablett Jnr is the only current day player to have won two medals (2009 and 2013).

Obvious dangers to the four at the top of the market are Patrick Cripps and Steele Sidebottom. Cripps picked up 20 votes this year, an astonishing feat given that his side only managed to win two games. Cripps is rated a $12 chance, while Sidebottom is $15.

The silky GWS player, Josh Kelly is at $16, while Dayne Beams ($18), Max Gawn ($21) and this year's 3rd placegetter, Brayshaw ($26), are other fancies.

There is plenty of value to be found in the market. Sydney's Lance Franklin is at $51 and comes off another excellent year for the Swans. The superstar forward polled 16 votes in 2018, which followed his 23 in the 2017 season.

Franklin has gone as close as anyone to becoming the first non-midfielder to win the award since Essendon's Gavin Wanganeen claimed victory in 1993 as a back-pocket for Essendon.

The 2012 winner of the Brownlow, Trent Cotchin, is also a $51 shot. Other roughies include the young Collingwood star, Jordan de Goey at $51, while the Western Bulldogs ball-magnet Lachie Hunter is at $101.
