AFL 2018 Fixtures - Round-by-round guide to the 2018 AFL home and away season

Adam Cusworth 12 Dec 2017
  • Carlton take on the premiers Richmond in Round 1
  • When will Luke Hodge and Jake Lever face their former sides?
  • ANZAC Day clash on a Wednesday in 2018

The 2018 AFL home and away season will kick off with the traditional season opener between the Richmond Tigers and Carlton on Thursday March 22.

The two sides have met each other in Round 1 for the past 10 seasons and their clash is one of nine huge matches to start off the season. Essendon and Adelaide feature in Friday night football at Etihad Stadium on the same weekend, while Hawthorn and Collingwood line up in what should be a blockbuster at the MCG on the Saturday night.

The Thursday night game for Richmond is one of eight prime time clashes for the premiers in 2018. Damien Hardwick's side feature on Thursday nights on three occasions, while they will be in action on five Friday's across the year.

They take on the Adelaide Crows on the Thursday night before the Easter weekend at the Adelaide Oval, a game in which the Crows will be looking to gain some revenge after going down to the Tigers by 48 points in the big one in 2017.

Other key games throughout 2018 include the traditional Anzac Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood, which will be held on a Wednesday, while Richmond and Melbourne feature in the ANZAC Eve clash.

North Melbourne appear in the action on Good Friday and will be taking on St Kilda. In 2017, the Kangaroos featured in the first ever game on Good Friday, going down to the Western Bulldogs.

As usual, there will be a number of players lining up against former sides. Hawthorn's former captain, Luke Hodge, will have to wait until Round 17 to take on his old mates as a Brisbane Lion, while Melbourne's Jake Lever travels to the Adelaide Oval as his new side face the Crows in Round 19.

The Gold Coast Suns and Port Adelaide make the trek over to China for premiership points in Round 9, while shortened rounds will be held across Round's 12 to 14 as the competition's sides rotate through the bye.
