  • Here is our rundown of the big day.

The 2018 AFL Grand Final takes place on Saturday September 29 at the MCG and gets underway at its traditional 2.30pm AEST time slot.

This year's edition of the AFL Grand Final pits the West Coast Eagles up against Collingwood and will be screened live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy. 100,000 fans are expected at the home of football with gates set to open at the venue at 8am. A number of those fans will be making the journey over from Perth.

The Eagles are currently slight outsiders in the head to head betting with BetEasy and are rated a $2.20 chance of notching up their first flag since 2006. Adam Simpson's side last appeared in the Grand Final in 2015, going down to Hawthorn. Despite their underdog status, they defeated Collingwood as few as three weeks ago in the Qualifying Final by 16 points.

The Magpies, who are based at the 'Holden Centre', which is the site of the old Olympic Park in inner Melbourne, just a stone‚Äôs throw away from the MCG, will be coached by Nathan Buckley and captained by Scott Pendlebury. The Magpies skipper is one of three players that represented the club in their most recent premiership, which was back in 2010.

This will be the first Grand Final that Collingwood have appeared in during Buckley's tenure at the club after he took over in 2012. The former champion on-baller is no stranger to the last Saturday in September, having played in Collingwood's losing Grand Finals in 2002 & 2003, winning the Norm Smith Medal in 2002.

If Collingwood are successful it will be their 16th premiership, joining Carlton and Essendon with the most flags. The Magpies were one of eight clubs that formed the then VFL in 1897. West Coast joined the VFL (now AFL) in 1987 and have been successful in 1992, 1994 and 2006.

Among some of the other events in the lead up to the Grand Final will be the Grand Final Parade on Friday, as well as the Foxtel Footy Festival, which runs at the Toyota AFL Grand Final Live Site on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The Grand Final parade starts at midday from Spring Street in Melbourne and finishes at the Live Site at about 1pm.

On Grand Final day, live entertainment includes performances from the Black Eyed Peas and Jimmy Barnes while the competition's quickest players line up in the Grand Final sprint at half time.
