  • We're looking to win big with our weekend multibet on Round 9 of the AFL.
  • Here are our selections.

Round 9 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Friday May 17 when West Coast take on Essendon at Optus Stadium and there are nine games in store for the weekend.

We have previewed the action and picked out a 5-leg multi that pays $248 for a $10 unit at sportsbet. Here are our selections.

Friday, May 17

West Coast Eagles v Melbourne, Optus Stadium, 8.10pm
West Coast -20.5 $1.90

West Coast have had a few hiccups this season but their last couple of weeks have been promising. At their home ground they will be too strong. West Coast thumped Melbourne at Perth Stadium in the Preliminary Final last year by 66 points and while the Demons did enjoy a win at the venue a few weeks earlier they just don't seem to be travelling anywhere as well as last year. Injury concerns are also a concern, while West Coast head in with a relatively healthy list. With Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff all in good form, as well as the ominous presence of Josh Kennedy and Jeremy McGovern at opposite ends of the ground, the Eagles will be too strong.

Saturday May 18

Brisbane Lions v Adelaide Crows, Gabba (2.10pm)
Adelaide Crows Head to Head $2

Little separates the two sides in more ways than one but Adelaide might have the defensive game to stifle the Lions. Daniel Talia, Alex and Rory Laird have all been in fine form down back and in the past five weeks the Crows have conceded an average of just 57 points per game. Brisbane will need big games from their forwards, while in the middle of the ground, Lachie Neale, Mitch Robinson and Dayne Zorko will provide plenty of supply. But the Crows might just have too much depth around he ground and can head in with confidence after their past month of footy. The Crows also have an excellent record against Brisbane, winning their past six games against the Lions by an average margin of a whopping 62 points. Five of those games have been held at the GABBA.

Essendon $1.39 v Fremantle $2.85, Marvel Stadium (7.25pm)
Fremantle +17.5 $1.90

Essendon take on Fremantle in what shapes as an interesting game at Marvel Stadium and the pressure is well and truly on the Bombers, who come off a narrow and frustrating loss last weekend against Sydney. The Dons have won three of eight and are languishing in 13th position. Their record is slightly inferior compared to their opponents for this weekend, Fremantle, who have won four. With their star midfielder, Nathan Fyfe, in good form, the Dockers can test the Bombers, who have a few injury concerns. Take Freo with the 17.5 point start.

North Melbourne v Sydney Swans, Blundstone Arena — Hobart (7.25pm)
North Melbourne Head to Head $1.72

Little separates the two sides but I am inclined to jump on North on the back of their strong record at Blundstone Arena. The Roos have a good record at the Hobart venue, winning their past five. They include wins over West Coast, Adelaide and Carlton last year. The Kangas have the inside mids including Ben Cunnington and Luke Parker that can match the Swans and if they can provide the likes of Ben Brown with enough supply they can register their third win for the year.

Sunday May 19

GWS Giants v Carlton, Sydney Showground Stadium (4.40pm)
Carlton +37.5 $1.90

Apart from a blowout against North Melbourne a couple of weeks ago, Carlton have been in contention in most games. A win may just be beyond them yet again but they do represent value at the line. Their midfield can go with some of the jets from GWS and they average more contested possessions and clearances that the expansion side. A key will be their ability to stifle the Giants running game with the Hawks showing how that can be don by defeating GWS by 33 points last weekend. Carlton pushed the Grand Finalists, Collingwood, in the same round and have improved in their two interstate games so far this season.
