  • We're looking to win big with our weekend multibet on Round 23 of the AFL.
  • Here are our selections.

We have reached the final weekend of the AFL home and away season and there are nine absorbing games to be played out.

We have previewed the action and picked out a five-leg multi that pays $273 for a $10 investment at Sportsbet

Saturday August 24

Sydney Swans v St Kilda (SCG), 1.45pm
St Kilda +14.5 $1.90

The two sides are out of the finals picture and will be playing for pride. Sydney head in as favourites on the back of the home ground advantage as well as an impressive display in Round 22 that saw them conquer Melbourne by 53 points. But it is arguably St Kilda with the superior recent form, having won three of five under Brett Ratten, while the Swans dropped six prior to their win over the Demons. Rowan Marshall can give the Saints first use in the middle, while Jack Billings and Seb Ross should also find plenty of it. It should also be noted that Sydney's form at the SCG has been questionable in the past couple of seasons and the Saints can go very close to pulling off an upset.

North Melbourne v Melbourne (Blundstone Arena), 2.10pm
North Melbourne -24.5 $1.90

North Melbourne shape as one of the better bets of the weekend on the back of some superior recent form. The Kangaroos demolished the finals contenders, Port Adelaide, by 86 points in Round 22, while on the same weekend, Melbourne's disappointing campaign went from bad to worse as they suffered a 53 point defeat at the hands of Sydney. That loss was the Demons sixth in succession and they will finish the season in 17th spot. Simon Goodwin's side have struggled defensively and the Kangaroos can capitalise with Ben Brown looming large in the goal square. Todd Goldstein is in excellent form in the ruck, while Ben Cunnington, Shaun Higgins and Jack Ziebell loom as other key players for the Kangaroos, who have won 18 of their past 19 against the Demons.

Geelong Cats v Carlton (GMHBA Stadium) 4.35pm
Carlton +30.5 $1.90

Carlton can give Geelong a big fright in this game, which shapes as a huge contest from a finals point of view with Geelong needing to win in order to finish in the top two and thus securing a home final. The Cats went down by a solitary point to Brisbane last weekend and take on the Blues, who have won six of 10 under their new coach David Teague. The emerging side have some budding stars in all parts of the ground, while their skipper, Patrick Cripps, is a leading Brownlow Medal contender. The Blues seasoned veterans in Marc Murphy and Matt Kreuzer also come into this with good form. Geelong's top liners will need to be at their best.

West Coast Eagles v Hawthorn (Optus Stadium), 8.10pm
West Coast 1-39 $2.10

This shapes a beauty and will be hotly contested with both sides needing a win. The two sides last met in Round 15 and that game went the way of West Coast in narrow fashion. Expect this one to be a similar result. Hawthorn have been playing some good football of late but the Eagles will be tough to beat on their home deck. Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling should appreciate a return to what should be a dryer surface, while Elliot Yeo and Jeremy McGovern are other stars that will have an influence.

Sunday August 25

Port Adelaide v Fremantle (Adelaide Oval), 4.40pm
Port Adelaide -17.5 $1.90

Port Adelaide have plenty to work on after being smashed last weekend but the topsy turvy side should be hard to beat here, provided they can get off to a fast start and improve in the middle of the ground. Travis Boak, Ollie Wines and Robbie Gray loom as key players for the home team, who are unbeaten at Adelaide Oval in three games against Fremantle. The Dockers were almost as equally unimpressive in their loss last weekend and lack any system going forward. It is hard to see them getting close in the final game of the home and away season.
