AFL Premiership Winner 2019 Betting Odds - West Coast $7.00 to defend premiership

Despite missing out on silverware in 2018, the Richmond Tigers have been installed as premiership favourites for the 2019 AFL season.

Damien Hardwick's Tigers were heavily fancied to capture back to back flags in 2018 but were shock losers in the Preliminary Final, going down to the eventual runner's up, Collingwood.

The 2017 premiers were the dominant side over the course of the year's home and away season, winning 18 of their allotted 22 games, but couldn't get past the Magpies penultimate week in this year's series.

However, with their new recruit, Tom Lynch, Hardwick's side should once again be a force to be reckoned with in 2019 as will the West Coast Eagles, who are on the second line of betting at $7.

The newly crowned premiers, West Coast, finished 2nd in the regular season with 16 wins to their credit but were able to get the job done when it mattered. Adam Simpson's side are likely to regain Nic Natanui from injury in the early stages of 2019 and should be prominent.

They will be out to become the first side to win back to back flags since Hawthorn in 2014. However, the Perth based side will have to overcome a slight recent hoodoo for sides backing up. Hawthorn crashed out in straight sets in 2016 following their 2015 success, while the Western Bulldogs missed the finals altogether in 2017 after winning in 2016.

Since the year 2000 only four sides (Brisbane in 2002/03 and Hawthorn in 2014/15) have won after being successful the year before. Of the 19 premiers in the time period, nine have failed to make the Grand Final the next year.

Along with West Coast at the $7 quote are the side that many consider to be the team of the future, Melbourne. The Demons finals exposure should hold them in good stead for next season, while Collingwood and GWS are also expected to be thereabouts.

The Magpies and the Giants are at $8 and $9 respectively and managed to push deep into this years finals, despite having to cope with extensive injury lists throughout the year.

Essendon have been installed at $14 alongside Sydney, while the perennial finalists, Hawthorn and Geelong are at $14 and $15 respectively. Adelaide are rated a $17 chance of capturing their first flag since 1998.

At the other end of the spectrum are Carlton at $151 and the Gold Coast Suns at $251. Both had disastrous campaigns in 2018 with the Blues winning just twice, while the Suns are set to lose a host of players to other clubs, including Lynch to the Tigers, while Steven May and Jack Martin are others being courted by opposition sides.
