Round 18 of the AFL home and away season gets underway with what looms as an important game for the Adelaide Crows and Essendon.

The two sides were among the winners in Round 17 and sit just inside the eight with nine wins apiece. Another victory is vital as we head into the last six weeks of the regular season.

Adelaide dismantled the hapless Gold Coast Suns by 95 points last weekend and find themselves in 7th position, just ahead of 8th placed Essendon, who claimed a thriller over North Melbourne by five points.

It is the Crows that have been posted as the favourites in the early head to head betting on the back of the home ground advantage with the game to be played at the Adelaide Oval. First bounce is at 7.50pm AEST or 7.20pm ACST.

On Saturday, there are five games in store and the first of those sees 5th placed Richmond play host to Port Adelaide, who dropped out of the eight after going down to Brisbane last weekend.

The battle will between the Tigers and the Power will be played at the MCG in what is another match that will have a bearing on the make up of the eight.

Across town at Marvel Stadium it is Carlton that face the struggling Gold Coast Suns and the Blues can make it four wins from six games under their new coach David Teague. The Blues find themselves in rare territory in the betting , having been installed as $1.25 favourites, there shortest quote in some time.

Twilight footy features another game that will have ramifications as far as the makeup of the eight goes as the GWS Giants play Collingwood at GIANTS Stadium in Sydney.

The Giants find themselves in 6th position on the ladder after a Round 17 encounter against Richmond that saw them go down by 27 points, while Collingwood are in 2nd spot after defeating West Coast by a point in what was a thrilling encounter in Perth on Friday night.

Saturday night footy sees the Brisbane Lions play North Melbourne at the GABBA, while in Perth, the Fremantle Dockers take on the Sydney Swans. Of that quartet, only Brisbane appear to be finals bound and the Lions can take anther step towards a top four berth with a victory.

There are three games to close out the round on Sunday and the first of those sees the modern day rivals, Geelong and Hawthorn, face each other at the MCG at 1.10pm.

Geelong sit two games clear on the top of the ladder, while the Hawks are in 10th spot and can ill afford another slip up if they are to remain in the hunt. But the Hawks have shown some encouraging signs in recent weeks and the two sides have a history of close games. Expect this to go down to the wire.

The action then heads to the Northern Territory where Melbourne lineup against the West Coast Eagles in Alice Springs. Expect the Eagles to get the points here against a Demons outfit that have disappointed in 2019.

St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs close out the round when they clash at Marvel Stadium at 4.40pm. The Bulldogs remain in the hunt after defeating Melbourne last weekend and another victory will see them close in on the loser out of the Adelaide and Essendon game.
