Round 22 of the AFL home and away season shapes as a huge one as sides scramble for positions within the top eight.

As many as eight of the nine games could have some bearing on the make up of position's within the top eight with key games to be played out between the top four bound Brisbane and Geelong at the GABBA on Saturday, while Richmond host the West Coast Eagles at the MCG on Sunday.

With one more round two go, those two games are likely to determine just which sides will finish in the top two and gain a home final later on.

Brisbane have been the improvers in 2019, winning 16 games this season and sit in 2nd spot on the ladder after easily accounting for their Queensland rivals, the Gold Coast Suns, last weekend.

They have opened up at the odds of $1.78 in the early head to head betting for their encounter with Geelong, who are at $2.03 after defeating North Melbourne in Round 21.

Richmond sit in 4th position at the conclusion of Round 21 after Carlton, while West Coast are 3rd. This game could very well be a preview of the Grand Final later on and it is Richmond that are the $1.57 favourites on the back of the home ground advantage.

The weekend gets underway when Melbourne and Sydney face each other on Friday night at the MCG. Both sides are out of the finals race but will be out to salvage some pride after their disappointing 2019 campaigns.

On Saturday there are five games and it is Carlton and St Kilda that kickstart proceedings when they meet at the MCG, while a sort time later the Lions and the Cats go at it at the GABBA.

Following these two games it is the Adelaide Crows and Collingwood that meet at the Adelaide Oval. There is plenty at stake for both sides in this game. The Crows find themselves out of the eight and need a win, while the Magpies sit in 5th spot and will be out to push their top four credentials.

Saturday night sees a further two games that will influence the lower half of the eight with North Melbourne and Port Adelaide going at it at Marvel Stadium, while over in the west it is the Fremantle Dockers that host Essendon at Optus Stadium in Perth.

The Kangaroos and the Bombers will be out to bounce back after producing disappointing efforts in Round 21.

On Sunday there are three games and while the pick of those is the 1.10pm Tigers and Eagles clash, the following two are also important from a top eight point of view.

6th placed GWS will be out to turn things around after being outclassed by Hawthorn last weekend and they take on the Western Bulldogs, who are flying at the moment.

The Hawks can keep alive their unlikely bid for a finals spot when they line up against the struggling Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium.
