We have reached the final weekend of the AFL home and away season and Round 23 shapes as an huge one as sides scramble for positions within the top eight.

The action gets underway on Friday night with the blockbuster clash between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG.

The two sides are safely in the eight but have plenty to play for. Collingwood will be gunning for a top four spot and need to win to have any hope of securing the double chance.

The Magpies will then need either Richmond or West Coast to lose later in the round. Essendon are likely to find themselves in 7th or 8th position regardless of the result.

On Saturday there are five games in store and three of these will have some bearing on the makeup of the eight. The first two feature four teams that are out of contention as Sydney host St Kilda at the SCG, while North Melbourne take on Melbourne at Blundstone Arena.

Then it is off to Geelong for the clash between Geelong and Carlton. The Cats lost their grip on top spot after going down to Brisbane last weekend and will need to win this to claim the home final. Otherwise they could slip to 3rd or 4th.

The Cats head in as favourites on the back of the home ground advantage but is a danger game for Chris Scott's side as they bump into a rejuvenated Blues outfit that have won six of 10 under David Teague.

On Saturday night, it is the two expansion clubs that go at it with the Gold Coast Suns playing the GWS Giants at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast. The Giants are likely to rebound here and are expected to finish 6th, thus securing a home Elimination Final.

Over in the west, the West Coast Eagles play host to Hawthorn. The Eagles could finish anywhere in the top four. A win will see them possibly land in the top two, depending in the result of the Richmond and Brisbane game on Sunday.

Hawthorn have to cause an upset if they are any chance of finishing in the eight. Alistair Clarkson's side will then need the Western Bulldogs to lose to Adelaide the following day.

The action concludes on Sunday with three games and all three could help decide the finishing order of the eight. The Western Bulldogs are in the box seat in terms of grabbing 8th spot and a win will see them advance.

However, Adelaide will be going all out to make sure that this does not happen as they can still sneak in if they win. The Dogs are the favourites due to their superior recent form.

At the MCG it is a top four clash with Richmond taking on Brisbane at the home of footy. If the Tigers win they will need some other results to go their way in order to finish top two. Brisbane are likely to end up in top spot if they secure victory but could slip to 4th if they go down.

The regular season concludes on Sunday night when Port Adelaide host Fremantle at the Adelaide Oval. By this stage, the Power will have a clearer indication of what they need to do. If Hawthorn and the Bulldogs go down, the Power can still qualify with a percentage boosting win.
