Round 5 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Thursday April 18 when the Brisbane Lions play host to Collingwood at the GABBA.

The encounter between the Lions and the Magpies is the first of nine intriguing games that are spread across five days of the easter weekend that concludes with the blockbuster clash between Hawthorn and Geelong on Monday at the MCG.

The Lions tasted defeat for the first time last weekend, going down to Essendon by 47 points at the MCG but they have won both of their encounters at the GABBA this season and will be no pushovers for Collingwood.

The Magpies have won just two of their four games so far this season but have been posted as the $1.55 favourites in the early head to head betting on the back of their superior standing last season.

Good Friday sees two games in store and the first of those will be played at Marvel Stadium where North Melbourne take on Essendon. The Kangaroos notched up their first win of the season last weekend but are slight underdogs here.

The second of the Friday games sees West Coast play host to Port Adelaide at Perth Stadium. The Eagles are one of six sides in the competition that have won three games and are currently in 3rd position on the ladder, just behind Geelong and GWS.

The premiers from 2018 handed their local rivals, Fremantle, a 13 point defeat in round 4 and will be tough to beat for the Power, who have dropped their past two.

On Saturday, there are three games in store and the first of those sees the GWS Giants take on Fremantle. The Giants come off an excellent four point win on the road against Geelong last weekend and should be tough to beat.

In Melbourne, the Melbourne Demons take on St Kilda at the MCG. The Demons finally broke through last weekend but come up against a Saints outfit that have been the surprise packets this season. Alan Richardson's side have won three of four and come off a narrow win over Hawthorn in Round 4.

At Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, Richmond take on the Sydney Swans and the Tigers defied their mounting injury toll last weekend to defeat Port Adelaide in Adelaide.

The 2017 premiers can register another important early season win against a Swans outfit that have battled in the early stages of 2019, winning just one of four.

On Sunday it is the Western Bulldogs that take on Carlton, while in Adelaide, the Adelaide Crows meet the Gold Coast Suns before the traditional Monday clash between the Hawks and the Cats.
