Round 9 of the AFL home and away season gets underway when the West Coast Eagles play host to Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Friday night.

Sportsbet have installed the reigning premiers, West Coast, as $1.26 favourites for the May 17 clash, while Melbourne are $3.70 in early markets.

The two sides last clashed at the venue in the Preliminary Final last season and on that occasion it was the Eagles that cruised home to win by 66 points before going on to win the premiership.

This year, West Coast have opened up with a win-loss record of 5-3, while Melbourne are 3-5. The Demons have kept their season alive with two thrilling wins in recent weeks but will need to be at their best on Friday.

The following day there are five games in store and the action kicks off when Collingwood take on St Kilda at the MCG. After a strong start to the season, the Saints have dropped away by losing their past three games and will head in as underdogs against a Collingwood outfit that sit in second spot on the ladder.

In Brisbane, third meets fifth as the Adelaide Crows travel to the GABBA to take on the Brisbane Lions. The Crows have won their past four but the Lions have a good record at home and little separates the two sides in the early betting.

Twilight footy sees Geelong play host to the Western Bulldogs at GMHBA Stadium and the Cats will be looking to further enhance their top four credentials with a win over the Bulldogs. Chris Scott's side sit on top of the table with seven wins to their credit from eight games thus far.

On Saturday night it is Essendon that face Fremantle at Marvel Stadium, while at Blundstone Arena in Hobart, North Melbourne take on the Sydney Swans.

Both North Melbourne and Sydney have won just two matches this season and will be desperate to improve on that record. The Swans held on in a thriller over Essendon last weekend. Another loss for the Bombers will spell trouble for their finals aspirations later on.

On Sunday there are three games to close out the weekend and the first of those sees Port Adelaide up against the Gold Coast Suns at the Adelaide Oval. The Power have plenty of injury concerns at the moment but are favoured in the betting.

Richmond and Hawthorn meet in what should be an interesting game at the MCG at 3.20PM. The Tigers are another side with a lengthy injury list but have been able to defy that in recent times. They are favoured against a Hawks side that were impressive winners over GWS last weekend.

The Giants can turn the tables when they face bottom-placed Carlton in the final match of the weekend. The full fixture is outlined below. All times are in AEST and head to head betting odds are courtesy of Sportsbet
