The AFL have announced the schedule for the first week of the finals series and it is the West Coast Eagles and Essendon that open up proceedings when they clash at Optus Stadium on Thursday September 5.

West Coast earnt the right to host the Elimination Final after finishing 5th at the end of the home and away season and with the home ground advantage expected to be a factor, last year's premiers have been posted as $1.24 favourites for the sudden death game.

However, the Eagles will need to turn their form around and come off two recent losses. They were exposed by Hawthorn at the venue in Round 23, going down to the Hawks by 38 points, while on the same weekend, Essendon, lost to Collingwood in a competitive game at the MCG by 11 points. The Bombers have a number of injuries to key players and are rated a $3.95 chance in pulling off an upset.

On Friday night, a crowd of over 90,000 fans are expected at the MCG when Geelong and Collingwood do battle in the First Qualifying Final. The Cats finished in top spot at the end of the home and away season, while the Magpies ended up in 4th.

Nathan Buckley's side benefitted by the loss that West Coast suffered and snuck into the top four at the expense of the Eagles. The loser of this game will face up to the winner of the Eagles and Bombers clash in week two of the series.

The winner will advance through to the Preliminary Finals for a shot at the Grand Final. The betting for this game sees Geelong at $1,68, while Collingwood are at $2.15 in early markets.

On Saturday afternoon, the GWS Giants tackle the in-form Western Bulldogs. The Giants Stadium encounter is the first leg of a double header and gets underway at 3.20pm.

The Giants come off a big win over the hapless Gold Coast Suns, while the Bulldogs secured their September spot by defeating the Adelaide Crows in Ballarat in Round 23. This shapes as another tight game and it is the Giants that are slight underdogs at the $2.05 quote, while the Bulldogs are at $1.67

The week one finals action concludes on Saturday night when the Brisbane Lions host Richmond at the GABBA. The two sides met in Round 23 at the MCG and it was Richmond that took out that game by 27 points.

Brisbane are rated a $2.20 shot at winning their first finals match since 2009, while Richmond are slightly favoured at the $1.65. First bounce for this game is at $7.25pm.
