The AFL Semi Final weekend gets underway with what shapes as another huge clash at the MCG with Geelong taking on West Coast at the venue on Friday September 13.

Despite plenty of debate from Geelong, including their coach, Chris Scott, the game will not be played at the Cats usual home ground of GMHBA Stadium, with that venue overlooked due to its smaller capacity.

First bounce is at 7.50PM and it is West Coast that have been posted as slight favourites for the sudden death encounter. The Eagles are at the $1.72 quote in early markets with sportsbet, while Geelong are at $2.10.

In the first of the Elimination Finals, the Eagles took out Essendon by 65 points. Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps booted four for the winners in that clash, while Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo were amongst some of the other players that starred for the 2018 premiers.

A night later it was Geelong that lined up at the MCG against Collingwood and the Cats went down by 10 points in that game after a slow start proved to be costly

However, the Cats live to fight another day, courtesy of the double chance that they acquired by finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season.

Despite their slight underdog status, Chris Scott's men did enjoy more regular season wins than West Coast and they thumped the Eagles by 58 points in the only clash between the two sides this year, which was back in Round 6 at GMHBA Stadium.

Geelong also enjoy an excellent record over West Coast in Victoria, winning their past seven, including the 2011 Preliminary Final at the MCG by 48 points. The winner of this game will advance through to the Preliminary Final to take on Richmond for a shot at the Grand Final, while it is curtains for the loser.

The second of the Semi Finals will be played on Saturday at the GABBA and it is the Brisbane Lions that will be keen to rebound when they host the GWS Giants at 7.25pm.

In week one, the Lions hosted Richmond at the venue but were no match for the Tigers, going down by 47 points. On the same day, GWS stayed in contention by knocking over the Western Bulldogs by 58 points in the Elimination Final.

Brisbane had the superior form over the course of the home and away season, finishing 2nd on the ladder with 16 wins to their credit, while the Giants ended in 6th position with 13 wins.

However, that counts for little now and the Giants have been the better side in previous years, having made the Preliminary Finals in both 2016 and 2017, while they bowed out at this stage last season. This is Brisbane's first finals appearance since 2009.

Little separates the two sides in a number of key areas. GWS can take some confidence out of the fact that they have been bolstered by the return of a number of players from injury, but Brisbane enjoy what will be a parochial home ground advantage.

The Lions have been posted as slight favourites in the head to head betting at the $1.63 quote. The winner of this game will then take on Collingwood in the Preliminary Final, while the loser can kiss goodbye to their 2019 campaign.
