Round 1 of the AFLW season gets underway on Friday night, February 2, when Carlton and Collingwood meet at Ikon Park and there are four games in store for the weekend.

Here is our preview of the action.

CARLTON ($1.45) v COLLINGWOOD ($2.75)

Friday 2 February, 7.40pm at Ikon Park

The two sides met in front of a sell-out crowd at the venue in Round 1 last year and on that occasion it was Carlton by 35 points. The Blues eventually finished 4th in the inaugural season, just ahead of 5th placed Collingwood. The Damien Keeping-coached Carlton are tipped to be the improvers this year and picked up the former Magpie, Nicola Stevens, in the trade period, as well as Tayla Harris from the Lions. With last year's leading goal kicker, Darcy Vescio, in the mix, they should be hard to beat.

MELBOURNE ($1.36) v GWS GIANTS ($3.15)

Saturday 3 February, 5.05pm at Casey Fields

After a slow start in 2017, Melbourne narrowly missed out on a finals birth and should take the points against GWS, who won just one match last season. The Demons have a number of promising players, including Lily Mithen and Jasmine Grierson, while stoppage star, Daisy Pearce, is set for another big campaign. The Giants can head in with some confidence, given they were shock winners over Melbourne in 2017 but will need massive games from the likes of Jessica Dal Pos and their new recruit, Alicia Eva.

Saturday 3 February, 6.45pm at Norwood Oval

Game 3 pits the Grand Finalists from 2017 up against one another and the Lions will be out to exact some revenge after going down by 16 points in the decider last season. Craig Starcevich's side will have to do it without Tayla Harris but their depth across the field means they are in the hunt. Sabrina Frederick-Taub looms as a key player, while for the home side, Erin Phillips and Sarah Perkins, shape as match winners. This one should go right down to the wire. Take the Lions with the start.

Sunday 4 February, 4.35pm at Whitten Oval

The Round 1 action closes out when the Western Bulldogs host Fremantle at Whitten Oval. The Doggies were slightly disappointing in season 2017, finishing in 6th position with two wins, just ahead of Freo, who finished 7th. The fixture between the two sides last year saw the Dogs prevail by 32. A fit Ellie Brennan should be a boost to the Dogs squad and with No.1 draft pick, Isabel Huntington in the mix, they should have enough firepower to account for the Dockers.
