AFLW Grand Final Tips and Predictions - Close one in store between Brisbane and Adelaide in battle for premiership

Adam Cusworth 23 Mar 2017
  • Brisbane finished the regular season undefeated and in top position
  • Adelaide narrowly went down to the Lions three weeks ago
  • Game to be played at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast

The inaugural AFLW competition reaches it's conclusion on Saturday March 25 when the Brisbane Lions play host to the Adelaide Crows in what should be a beauty at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Brisbane remained undefeated in the home and away season and finished in top spot, earning the right to host the final, while Adelaide advanced through after defeating Collingwood last weekend.

The action gets underway at 12.55pm AEST and will be broadcast live on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Brisbane head in as slight favourites to take out the historic match and have been posted at odds of $1.77 with CrownBet, while Adelaide are rated a $2.05 chance.

The Lions won six of their seven regular season games before drawing with Carlton last Sunday.

Brisbane headed into that game safe in the knowledge that they had already sewn up a Grand Final berth. They led by 19 points with just five minutes remaining before a spirited Carlton fightback at the Blues home ground of Ikon Park.

Earlier on the same day, Adelaide took on Collingwood at Olympic Park in Melbourne and the Crows clinched a Grand Final spot after producing a stellar last quarter to run out 24-point winners.

The Bec Goddard coached Crows needed to win that game to feature in the premiership playoff. Their hopes were in danger in the early stages of the last term as they trailed the Magpies, before letting loose.

Sarah 'Tex' Perkins was the star, booting four goals, while Erin Phillips chimed in with three. Ebony Marinov continued her excellent season, notching up 17 possessions.

Adelaide finished the season with five wins from their seven games. Their two losses came at a combined margin of just five points. They went down to Melbourne by two points in Round 6 and Brisbane by three points in Round 5.

That encounter was played in Norwood in Adelaide and it was Brisbane that held the Crows at bay late in the final term. Emily Bates was one of the stars for Brisbane, while Kate McCarthy kicked two vital goals.

Bates and McCarthy loom as key players for the unbeaten Lions this weekend, as does Sabrina Frederick Traub. The English born marquee player will team up in the ruck with Sharni Webb and that duo will look to get on top of Rhiannon Metcalfe.

Interestingly, Brisbane have had the best defence of any side in the competition, conceding a paltry 21 points per game, while the Crows are the top scorers of any side and have averaged a healthy 42 points.

Kate Lukins and Leah Kaslar are the frontrunners to get the jobs on Perkins and Philips and the battle in this part of the ground will be pivotal

Prediction and Tips

This one really is a roll of the dice but I really liked the way Adelaide finished off last weekend compared to the Lions. The Crows to win a tight one.
