One of the key games of AFL Round 22 is the Brisbane Lions and Geelong Cats clash at the GABBA on Saturday August 17.

First bounce is at 2.10pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Foxtel.

Match Preview

This shapes as a beauty with the competition's top two sides to go at it. Brisbane have been posted as the slight favourites in the early head to had betting and enjoy the home ground advantage.

Both sides have won 15 of their 20 games in 2019 and come off big wins in Round 21. Brisbane smashed their local rivals, the Gold Coast Suns by 91 points, while Geelong restricted North Melbourne to just one goal in their 55 point victory over the Kangaroos.

It is Brisbane with the slightly superior recent form having won their past eight, while in the same time period, Geelong have won four and loss four.

The Lions will look to get on top at the stoppages and their small forwards will be hard to contain. Charlie Cameron comes off a six goal haul, while Dayne Zorko, Jarrad Lyons and Lachie Neale have been finding plenty of it in the middle.

The latter trio come up against the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan and Tim Kelly in the midfield and the battle in this part of the ground should be a beauty.

At stake in this clash is a possible home final with the winner just about guaranteed to finish top two, while the loser is at risk of being overhauled by both West Coast and Richmond with just one game to go in the home and away season.

Selection News

Brisbane's Lincoln McCarthy is in some doubt with an ankle injury. The Lions have few injury concerns heading towards September. Tom Cutler is expected to be available for selection after missing the past few with a foot injury.

Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield is expected to be ok despite coming off for treatment for a knee injury in the win over North Melbourne. Mark O'Connor and Zac Smith are a chance to return for the Cats, while Charlie Constable is among those with form in the VFL but may find it hard to squeeze in.

Match Odds

Brisbane Lions $1.78
Geelong Cats $2.03

Geelong have dominated Brisbane in recent seasons, winning the past eight games between the two sides, a sequence that stretches back to 2013.

The most recent of those games was in Round 19 of 2018 and it was the Cats by 42 points at GMHBA Stadium. In 2017 it was an 85 point win for Geelong at the GABBA. Brisbane are eight from nine at their home ground this season. The Cats have won three of their five interstate games in 2019.

Prediction and Tips

This should be a ripper and the Lions can get up in a close one.
