  • The Lions and the Giants square off in a sudden death Semi Final.
  • Here is our preview of the Saturday night GABBA clash.

The second of the AFL Semi Finals will be played on Saturday September 14 at the GABBA as the Brisbane Lions host the GWS Giants.

First bounce is at 7.25pm and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Foxtel.

Match Preview

In week one of the finals, Brisbane hosted Richmond at the GABBA but were no match for the Tigers, going down by 47 points. On the same day, GWS stayed in contention by knocking over the Western Bulldogs by 58 points in the Elimination Final.

Brisbane had the superior form over the course of the home and away season, finishing 2nd on the ladder with 16 wins to their credit, while the Giants ended in 6th position with 13 wins.

However, that counts for little now and the Giants have been the better side in previous years, having made the Preliminary Finals in both 2016 and 2017, while they bowed out at this stage last season. This is Brisbane's first finals appearance since 2009.

Little separates the two sides in a number of key areas. GWS can take some confidence out of the fact that they have been bolstered by the return of a number of players from injury, but Brisbane enjoy what will be a parochial home ground advantage.

One of the keys to this game will be Brisbane's ability to convert. They have a dynamic forward line but that group were wasteful early on against Richmond last weekend.

Charlie Cameron and Eric Hipwood are among a number of players that will be out to rebound. Cameron has booted 55 goals this season but only three in the past two weeks. Both of those recent games were against Richmond. Prior to the Tigers loss, the Lions won nine on the trot.

GWS also have plenty of quality in their forward 50. The Coleman Medal winner, Jeremy Cameron, will be a key target, while Jeremy Finlayson and Toby Greene are others that are capable of stepping up. That duo combined for six goals in the win over the Bulldogs.

Other key battles occur in the midfield, where the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper take on Brisbane's Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko and Jarryd Lyons. The winner of this game will take on Collingwood in the Preliminary Final, while the loser can kiss goodbye to their 2019 campaign.

Selection News

Brisbane are set to lose Mitch Robinson to a hamstring injury. The Lions have a healthy list to choose from in terms of replacements with Ben Keays and Lewis Taylor among those waiting in the wings.

GWS veteran Brett Deledio picked up yet another calf injury and sadly, his career is all but over. Stephen Coniglio is edging closer to a return but may not come up. Isaac Cumming and Adam Tomlinson are among those that will be considered.

Match Odds

Brisbane Lions $1.63
GWS Giants $2.25

The two sides have met on nine occasions since GWS entered the league in 2012 and it is the expansion club that has won six of those games. However, Brisbane claimed the most recent clash between the two sides, taking out the Giants by 20 points at Giants Stadium in Sydney in Round 16 this season.

Lachie Neale picked up 31 possessions in that encounter, while Lincoln McCarthy booted three goals. Stephen Coniglio was the Giants best as Harrison Himmelberg booted four.

GWS have won their past four games at the GABBA with those wins coming at an average margin of 50 points. The Lions are a much improved outfit, however, and have won 10 of 12 at the venue in 2019. GWS have won five of their 10 interstate games this year.

Prediction and Tips

Brisbane to get through in a close one.
