Collingwood v Brisbane Lions Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Lions to push the Pies at Etihad Stadium

  • Can Collingwood pick up vital win in quest to play finals for the first time in five years?

Collingwood take on the Brisbane Lions in AFL Round 21 and the Etihad Stadium clash gets underway at 7.25PM on Saturday August 11.

The 6th placed Magpies will be desperately looking for a win in their quest to play finals and all the action can be seen on Fox Sports.

Match Preview

Both sides featured in some of the thrilling games that punctuated Round 20. Collingwood went down to Sydney at the SCG by two points, while Brisbane missed out at the GABBA, losing to North Melbourne by four.

The Magpies have been posted as favourites for this game but will need to find a way to do it without a number of key players, particularly in their defensive half of the ground.

Darcy Moore went down with another injury in the loss to Sydney, while the Swans star Lance Franklin booted six goals. While Brisbane have no 'Buddy' in their outfit, they do have a host of dangerous young players that will need to be contained.

Eric Hipwood and Cameron Rayner are among the Lions cubs that are capable. Rayner will be looking to make amends after missing a late opportunity to steal the game against North last weekend.

However, it is in the midfield where this game will be won and lost. Collingwood rank higher than the Lions for total disposals and contested possessions but little separates the two clubs for total clearances and hitouts.

Steele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury take on their former teammate, Dayne Beams, as well as Dayne Zorko in this part of the ground, while Brodie Grundy goes head to head with Stefan Martin in the ruck. Grundy is in All-Australian form but Martin isn't too far behind.

A win in this game for Collingwood could have them back inside the top four at the conclusion of this round but a lost will be a disaster, particularly if other results go against them. They could end up outside the eight come Sunday evening.

Match Odds

Collingwood $1.29
Brisbane Lions $3.65

Team News

Collingwood lost another player to injury last weekend and this time it is Darcy Moore that will miss with a hamstring injury. He will be one forced change. Sam McLarty and James Aish are among those that have been showing some good signs in the VFL. Brisbane are likely to include Tom Cutler, who missed last weekend's game with suspension.

Stats

Collingwood have won the past four between the two sides including the Round 7 encounter at the GABBA this year by seven points. The Magpies' Jordan de Goey and Josh Thomas combined for eight goals on that occasion, while Dayne Zorko was Brisbane's best with four goals and 34 touches.

The two sides have not met at Etihad Stadium since 2002. The Magpies have played two games at the venue in 2018 for two wins, while Brisbane are yet to win in three attempts there this year.

Prediction and Tips

A lot will depend in what happens in the first quarter. Collingwood could blow Brisbane out of the water but if the Lions stick with them, their younger players will get their tails up. Take the Lions with the 24.5 point start. They haven't been far away in a number of games this year.
