  • Collingwood and GWS feature in a sudden death final. Who will advance through to the Prelims?

Collingwood and the GWS Giants square off in the second of the AFL Semi Finals and the sudden death encounter gets underway at 7.25PM on Saturday September 15.

The Magpies head in as slight favourites for the MCG clash and a Preliminary Final date with Richmond awaits the winner. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game.

Match Preview

Collingwood ended the home and away season in 3rd position with 15 regular season wins, while GWS were 7th with 13 victories from their 22 matches.

The Magpies earned the double chance but went down to the West Coast Eagles by 16 points in the Qualifying Final in the first week of the finals series. Nathan Buckley's side led the Eagles halfway through the last quarter but faded late in the game to go down.

On the same day, GWS conquered their cross-town rivals, Sydney, by 49 points. The Giants are one side that may have benefitted from the break between Round 23 and the finals series and have regained a number of key players from injury.

In the win over the Swans, they smashed their opposition in the disposal count as well as at winning the contested football. Over the course of the home and away season they ranked 5th and 3rd in these measures, while they were the league's best for winning the clearances.

Look for their host of midfielders to have a say in proceedings. Lachie Whitfield, Stephen Coniglio and Callan Ward are among a number in good form.

However, Collingwood are also very strong in these areas. The Magpies were the competition's highest ranked side for disposals in the home and away season, while they were 3rd for contested possessions and 4th for clearances. Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Taylor Adams will more than match the Giants on-ball brigade.

The Magpies should have an advantage in the ruck with Brodie Grundy set to do battle against Rory Lobb. Potential match winners for GWS include Jeremy Cameron and Toby Greene. Cameron has a good record in games against Collingwood, while Greene returned from injury last weekend and snagged three goals in his first game back.

At the other end of the ground, Collingwood have a dearth of scoring options. The Magpies ranked 3rd for scoring this year with Will Hoskin-Elliot, Jordan de Goey, Josh Thomas and Jaidyn Stephenson all booting over 30 goals in 2018.

Match Odds

Collingwood $1.60
GWS Giants $2.35

Team News

Collingwood escaped without any injuries in the loss to West Coast. On their lengthy injury list, only Darcy Moore and Ben Reid are some realistic chance of returning this year but is it hard to see either of those being ready in time.

Josh Kelly is likely to miss for GWS after injuring his knee in the win over Sydney. His absence is a massive blow for the expansion club.

The two sides last met in Round 2 this season and on that occasion it was GWS 16 points at the MCG. Jeremy Cameron booted three goals for the Giants, while Lachie Whitfield and Callan Ward found plenty of the ball. Brodie Grundy and Scott Pendlebury were among Collingwood's better players.

Since GWS entered the league in 2012 it is Collingwood with the advantage at five wins to two. The Round 2 fixture this year was the first time the Magpies have lost to the Giants at the venue. GWS have played at the MCG twice in 2018, losing to Melbourne in Round 23 at their other hitout at the home of footy. The Magpies are seven from 13 at the 'g' this season.

Prediction and Tips

This one shapes as another classic. Both sides have managed a number of injuries to key players this season. The Giants have been the superior side in recent years and their win over Sydney was ominous. They may just be peaking at the right time and the +8.5 point start for the Giants might be the go in this.
