  • Here is our preview of the Saturday afternoon MCG clash.

Collingwood take on the GWS Giants in the Preliminary Final at the MCG on Saturday September 21.

First bounce is at 4.35pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Collingwood qualified in 4th position on the ladder at the end of the home and away season and registered a 10 point win over Geelong in the first week of the finals. They have since had the week off as the likes of GWS fought out the Semi Finals.

The Giants ended the regular season in 6th position and defeated the Western Bulldogs by 62 points in the Qualifying Final a fortnight ago before holding off the Brisbane Lions at the GABBA by three points last weekend.

A highlight of that performance was their staunch defence and the likes of Zac Williams and Nick Haynes stopped a number of Lions forward thrusts late in the game. At the other end, Jeremy Cameron booted three goals.

The Coleman Medal winner will be a key focal point for the Giants in their quest to make their first ever Grand Final. The expansion club bowed out in the Preliminary Finals in 2016 and 2017. Last year they missed out to Collingwood in the Semi's.

Both sides are evenly matched in the middle of the ground. Collingwood have averaged more possessions over the course of the season but GWS have more clearances and centre clearances.

Expect Brodie Grundy to get on top in the ruck, but Jacob Hopper and Josh Kelly will have a say on proceedings for the Giants. Toby Greene is another key player but will need to have a successful appeal at the tribunal if he is to play. Matt de Boer will line up on one of the Magpies big three in the middle in Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar or Steele Sidebottom.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the Richmond Tigers and the West Coast Eagles a week later at the MCG in the Grand Final.

Selection News

Collingwood's Jordan de Goey will miss with a hamstring injury. Ben Reid and James Aish are others that are edging closer to a return. Levi Greenwood will miss after tearing his ACL in the win over Geelong.

Stephen Coniglio is a possible inclusion for GWS as the star midfielder makes his bid to return from a knee injury. It remains to be seen if Toby Greene can have his suspension overturned.

Match Odds

Collingwood $1.50
GWS Giants $2.54

GWS were big winners the last time the two sides met, defeating Collingwood by 47 points in Round 18 this season at Giants Stadium in Sydney.

In that game, the Giants burst out of the blocks by booting eight first quarter goals. Jeremy Cameron booted six for the winners, while Harrison Himmelberg chimed in with four. Brodie Grundy and Adam Treloar were the best for Collingwood.

The Magpies have have won three of their four games against GWS at the MCG including the 2018 Semi Final by 10 points. The Pies are 11 from 15 at the home of footy this year. GWS have won one of three at the venue this year.

Prediction and Tips

This shapes as a close one. Collingwood will need to be wary of not getting off to a slow start and the break hasn't always been good for sides at this stage of the finals. The Giants can push the Pies.
