  • The Bombers host the Lions at the MCG in AFL Round 4.
  • Here is our preview of the Saturday afternoon clash

After breaking through for their first win of 2019, Essendon will be out to make it two in a row when they take on the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Saturday April 12.

The round four MCG clash gets underway at 2.10PM and all the action will be shown live on Fox Sports.

Match Preview

Essendon dropped their first two games of the season with those losses coming at the hands of GWS and St Kilda. Pressure was intensifying on the club but John Worsfold's men were able to hand Melbourne an 18 point defeat in round three.

Brisbane are one of just two unbeaten sides in the competition, winning all of their three fixtures. The young Lions are on track to breeze past the five victories they managed last year and have defeated last year's premiers, West Coast, as well as North Melbourne and Port Adelaide.

Little separates the two sides in the early head to head betting. Essendon will need big games from their leaders, including Dyson Heppell, David Zaharakis and Orazio Fantasia.

That trio were influential last weekend, as were Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, Jake Stringer and Shaun McKernan, with the latter three combining for 12 goals.

Brisbane, who have won three in a row for the first time since 2010, have a number of match winners around the ground. Lachie Neale leads the competition for disposals after the first three weeks, while Eric Hipwood comes off a six goal haul. Josh Walker and Luke Hodge have been keys down back and if they can take their form down to Marvel they should be hard to beat.

Team News

McKernan is a chance to miss for Essendon after pulling up with a sore hamstring last weekend. Kobe Mutch will be replaced due to a similar injury.

Brisbane's only immediate injury concern centres around Lincoln McCarthy. The Lions have a relatively healthy list to choose from with only three others on the sidelines.

Match Odds

Essendon $1.81
Brisbane Lions $1.92

Stats

Not much has separated the two sides in recent years. Essendon claimed the round 12 clash at the GABBA last year by 22 points but in 2017 it was Brisbane by eight points at Marvel Stadium.

The two sides have not met at the MCG since round 19 in 2009 and on that occasion they played out a thrilling draw. The Bombers have won just two of their past eight games at the home of footy but were winners there last weekend. Brisbane have lost their past six at the venue, a sequence that stretches back to 2014.

Prediction and Tips

Brisbane represent value in the head to head betting and can continue their unbeaten start to the season.
