  • The Fremantle Dockers take on Carlton in this Round 21 clash at Optus Stadium

The Fremantle Dockers take on the Carlton Blues in the last match of Round 21, on Sunday August 12 at Optus Stadium.

The match can be seen live on Fox Footy at 4:30pm AEST, with the match starting at 4:40pm.

Match Preview

With all the terrific matches at this time of the season, It’s hard to get excited about a 13th v 18th clash on a Sunday Afternoon. Despite the ladder position, this is an important game for both sides.

The Dockers have put in five meek performances since their skipper Nat Fyfe went down six-weeks ago. These efforts have included five 50+ point losses, to Brisbane, Melbourne, Hawthorn and West Coast. Their only shining light was an inspired nine-point victory against Port Adelaide.

A 57-point thrashing of Carlton at Etihad Stadium only two months ago was one of the few highlights of the Dockers season. A loss at home against the lowly Blues would mark rock bottom in Ross Lyon’s tenure at Fremantle.

This is not the first time Carlton and rock bottom have been mentioned in the same sentence. The Blues went lower than I could’ve imagined, allowing the GWS Giants to kick seven goals in the final quarter despite only having 16 or 17 players on the field for over eight minutes of the quarter. It really did look like a training drill at times for the Giants, as they outscored the Blues in every quarter to win by 105 points.

The Blues have struggled to do most things this season, the most notable of which has been scoring. The Blues haven’t reached 90 points in a match since Round 8 v Essendon. The Blues are averaging 61 points a game for the season, barely ahead of the Dockers who average 71 points.

Match Odds

Fremantle $1.23
Carlton $4.20

Team News

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe has said he will be pushing for selection this week, however, the club is much more likely to hold him back until Round 22 against Geelong. Andrew Brayshaw is obviously done for the season after his ‘incident’ with Andrew Gaff, whilst Stephen Hill might miss the rest of the year with a Quad injury.

The Blues may get some welcomed reinforcements back when they face Fremantle. Matthew Kreuzer (Heart), Jacob Weitering (Quad) and Jack Silvagni (Ankle) are all listed as ‘tests’ to play against the Dockers. It wouldn’t surprise if the Blues give Kreuzer another week, seeing as he is returning from an elevated heart rate.

Stats

  • Carlton is yet to play at the new Optus Stadium. The Dockers are 1-4 in their last five matches at Optus Stadium after starting the season 4-1 at that venue.
  • The Dockers have won five of their last six matches against Carlton, with four of those victories coming by 35 points or more.
