  • The Dockers and Bombers meet in Round 22 action at Optus Stadium
  • Here is our preview of the Saturday night clash

Fremantle host Essendon at Optus Stadium in Round 22 action on Saturday night.

The match will be broadcast live on Fox Footy with the first bounce at 8:10pm AEST (6:10pm local time).

Match Preview

A clash between Fremantle who sit 12th with a 9-11 record and Essendon who are seventh with an 11-9 record. Both clubs enter the match on the back of losses. The Dockers were beaten by three points against the Saints and the Bombers were annihilated 137-33 by the Bulldogs.

With finals looming and the Bombers having not won a final in more than 5,400 days, they will be keen to first, make September, and then win an elimination final. It’s hard to imagine the Bombers won’t be fired up after being embarrassed to the tune of 104 points by the Bulldogs last week.

Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe is chasing a second Brownlow Medal that could be around his neck in late September. He is having a better year than his 2015 Brownlow Medal-winning year. Expect him to have a field day against the Bombers. Bradley Hill and Ed Langdon were excellent last week; they will be pivotal for the Dockers to succeed at home.

There weren’t too many shining lights for the Dons last week. Zach Merrett was one of them however with 33 touches, eight marks and six tackles. They will be relying on Merrett to be devastating once again if they are to prevail over the Dockers. Dylan Shiel needs to lift and so does Jake Stringer who didn’t give a whimper against the Bulldogs. If both players can return to form, the Dons can cause an upset to secure a finals berth.

Selection News

Fremantle – Plenty of names on the chopping block after a loss to the Saints. Watch for the final team to be announced; it may include Hayden Ballantyne for one final match.

Essendon – Darcy Parish could return to the team. There will be some nervous Bombers after the Bulldogs obliterated them last week. Also keep an eye out for their final team to be announced.

Match Odds

Fremantle $1.45
Essendon $2.75

* Correct at time of writing

Last 5: Essendon 3, Fremantle 2
R9, 2019: Essendon 8.12 (60) def. Fremantle 7.11 (53)
The Dockers average five more hit outs per game

Prediction and Tips

The Bombers are in a form slump but with September just around the corner, they can dig deep to make it a close contest as they try to cling onto a spot in the eight.
