  • Who can take out the GMHBA Stadium encounter?

The Geelong Cats take on Carlton at GMHBA Stadium in the final round of the AFL home and away season.

The Saturday August 24 game gets underway at 4.35PM and all the action can be seen on Foxtel.

Match Preview

This shapes as a huge contest from a finals point of view with Geelong needing to win in order to finish in the top two and thus securing a home final.

The Cats lost their grip on top spot after going down to Brisbane by a point in Round 22. The Lions are now the top ranked side heading into the last round of the home and away season.

Geelong's opponents for Round 23, Carlton, are out of finals contention and are in 16th position on the ladder. However, the Blues have won six of 10 under their new coach David Teague and can push the Cats.

The emerging side come off a 10 point win over St Kilda and have some budding stars in all parts of the ground, while their skipper, Patrick Cripps, is a leading Brownlow Medal contender. The Blues seasoned veterans in Marc Murphy and Matt Kreuzer also come into this with good form.

For Geelong to avoid a slip up they will need more from some of their forwards, including Tom Hawkins, who went goalless last weekend. Patrick Dangerfield takes on Cripps in the middle, while Tim Kelly shapes as another pivotal player in this part of the ground.

Selection News

Geelong escaped without any injuries from the Brisbane game. Gary Rohan is edging closer towards a return from a knee injury.

Carlton are unlikely to make too many changes. Will Setterfield and Michael Gibbons both received treatment in the win over St Kilda but are expected to be ok. Dale Thomas appears for the club for the last time.

Match Odds

Geelong Cats $1.16
Carlton $5

* correct at the time of writing

Geelong have won nine of the past 10 games between the two sides. The last time the two sides met was in Round 10 of 2018 and that clash went the way of the Cats by 28 points.

Patrick Dangerfield and Tom Stewart found plenty of the ball for the winners, while Tom Hawkins booted three goals. Carlton's Patrick Cripps and Kade Simpson were Carlton's best, while Matt Kreuzer was dominant in the ruck.

Prediction and Tips

Carlton can give Geelong a big fright.
