One of the big games of AFL Round 4 shapes as the Geelong and GWS Giants encounter at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday April 13.

The two sides have made positive starts to the year and the action gets underway at 1.45PM. Fox Footy will broadcast the game live.

Match Preview

Geelong have set the pace in the early stages of the 2019 home and away season and sit on top of the AFL ladder, unbeaten with three wins.

They defeated Collingwood in the season opener by seven points, Melbourne in round two by 80, while last weekend it was a 24 point victory on the road against Adelaide. The three sides they have defeated were all tipped to be leading fancies this year.

GWS have won two of three. They have defeated Essendon and Richmond. Those two wins were split by their loss to West Coast in Perth in round two.

Their clash against Geelong could be a bit of a sneak peak towards this year's finals series. A highlight of the Cats performances has been the efforts of their younger players. Grian Miers booted three goals last weekend, feasting on the work of the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Tim Kelly and Gary Ablett further up the ground.

The Cats defence has also been super tight. They have conceded an average of just 62 points per game this season. GWS might battle to kick the winning score and it will be interesting to see if Jeremy Cameron can get the supply that saw him boot seven against Richmond last weekend.

Other key players for GWS include Lachie Whitfield, Stephen Congiglio and Tim Taranto. That trio were on fire last weekend but the question will be whether or not they can reproduce that on the road.

Team News

Geelong are unlikely to make too many changes to their line up. Jed News, Zach Tuohy, Nakia Cockatoo and Jack Henry are among those on the sidelines for up to a couple more weeks.

GWS will be sweating on the fitness of Toby Greene, who has missed the past two matches, while Callan Ward in another that is a chance of returning.

Match Odds

Geelong Cats $1.33
GWS Giants $3.13

Stats

GWS have beaten Geelong just once since joining the league in 2012. The two sides fought out a thrilling draw in round five of 2017. Since then, Geelong won by 44 points at GMHBA Stadium in round 23 of 2017 before enjoying a 61 point win at the venue last year in round seven.

In that encounter, Joel Selwood, Mitch Duncan and Patrick Dangerfield found plenty of the ball for the winners, while Tom Hawkins booted four goals. Dylan Shiel and Stephen Coniglio were the Giants best.

Prediction and Tips

Geelong will be far too good at their home ground.
