A couple of the AFL's key rivals, Geelong and Hawthorn, are set to lock horns once again on Sunday July 21 when they meet at the MCG.

First bounce is at 1.10pm AEST and all the action can be seen live on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Geelong have been the superior of the two sides this season and currently sit two wins clear on top of the AFL ladder. They have a win-loss record of 13-3 and another victory here will just about seal a top four spot.

Hawthorn have managed to win just seven of their 16 games and are languishing in 11th position on the ladder. But the Hawks have won their past two games and those victories have come up against Collingwood and Fremantle.

The Hawks will look to set up their play from their defensive half and James Sicily looms as a key, while Jarman Impey is another that is in good form. James Worpel and Jaegar O'Meara are key players in the middle but that pair will need to be at their best against a Cats outfit that boasts the likes of Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Mitch Duncan.

That trio were all instrumental in Geelong's 27 point win over St Kilda last weekend, while it is the Cats forwards that should also give the Hawks a few headaches. Geelong are averaging 92 points per game and Tom Hawkins, Gary Ablett and Gary Rohan have been the main contributors up in front of goal this season.

Selection News

Geelong have few injury concerns at the moment. Gary Ablett hurt his hip in the win over St Kilda but is expected to be ok. Jake Kolodjashnij missed that game with concussion but is expected to be available.

Jack Gunston is likely to come back in for Hawthorn after being rested last weekend. Jack Scrimshaw is edging closer to returning from a knee injury. James Cousins starred in the VFL last weekend and will be considered.

Match Odds

Geelong Cats $1.28
Hawthorn $3.45

Stats

The two sides have featured in some unbelievable games over the years and close finishes have usually been the common denominator. Geelong claimed the Round 5 Easter Monday clash this season by 23 points. Hawthorn won the corresponding fixture in 2018 by one point, before enjoying an 11 point win in Round 21. Geelong won the Round 17 2017 game by three points.

Four of the past seven games have been decided by under a goal. Geelong have won five of the past seven between the two sides and since the famous 2008 Grand Final the Cats have won 17 of 24. 15 of those 24 have been decided by 11 points or less.

Prediction and Tips

These two always seem to play in close games and this should be no exception. Expect Geelong's class to help them over the line.
