GWS Giants v Adelaide Crows Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Can the Crows keep their finals alive?

  • The Giants and the Crows square off in an important game in Canberra. Here is our preview of the Round 21 clash.

Another one of the big games in AFL Round 21 will be the Saturday night encounter between the GWS Giants and the Adelaide Crows at UNSW Stadium.

The pivotal clash gets underway at 7.25PM and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

GWS notched up a 105 point win over Carlton in Round 20 and sit in 3rd position on the ladder. The Giants have now won eight of their past nine and are one of the flag fancies at the $7.50 quote for the premiership with CrownBet.

Adelaide are all but out of contention in 12th position but the 2017 Grand Finalists are still a dangerous proposition and come off an excellent three point win over their local rivals, Port Adelaide last weekend.

Matt Crouch, Bryce Gibbs and Rory Sloane were among the Crows better players in that win and that trio comes up against the likes of Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield in the middle of the ground. Kelly ran amok in the win over Carlton, picking up 41 possessions.

The two sides rank high for contested possessions but the GWS are the better clearance side. The Giants are also the superior defensive side across the course of the year.

However, the Crows have regained a number of key players over the past month and their output in front of goal has improved. They are averaging 95 points per game in the past four weeks. Inaccuracy has cost them in that period and that number could be greater.

Look for Josh Jenkins, Taylor Walker and Eddie Betts to have an influence, whilst the other end of the ground the Giants may have to do it without Toby Greene, who pulled up with a hamstring issue from the Carlton win.

Match Odds

GWS Giants $1.46
Adelaide Crows $2.75

Team News

GWS have a stack of fresh injuries out of the Carlton win and Dawson Simpson and Brett Deledio likely to miss. Toby Greene and Sam Taylor also finished on the bench and are in doubt. The good news for the Giants is that Aidan Corr, Tim Taranto, Sam Reid and Dylan Shiel are all edging closer to a return.

Adelaide's Daniel Talia suffered a corked calf in the Crows win over Port Adelaide and will have until the game to prove his fitness. Richard Douglas and Mitch McGovern are expected to return from injury.

Stats

Adelaide have won eight of the 10 games between the two sides but GWS won the most recent of those, which was in Round 11 this season at the Adelaide Oval.

On that occasion, Dylan Shiel and Josh Kelly found plenty of the footy for the Giants in the 16 point win, while Bryce Gibbs and Matt Crouch were among Adelaide's best.

GWS have won their past eight at UNSW Oval, while Adelaide have never ventured to the Canberra venue. The Crows are three from eight outside of South Australia in 2018.

Prediction and Tips

The latest batch of injuries are a concern for GWS and Adelaide are not without a chance in this one. The Crows have been strong in the last four weeks and represent value at the 15.5 point line that has been set.
