  • The Giants and the Magpies square off in AFL Round 18.
  • Here is our preview of the Saturday afternoon encounter.

One of the key games of AFL Round 18 sees the GWS Giants host Collingwood at GIANTS Stadium in Sydney.

The Saturday July 20 fixture gets underway at 4.35pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

The two sides are among the better sides in the competition but it is Collingwood that have edged ahead of their Semi Final combatants from 2018, registering 11 wins, while GWS are stuck on nine victories, having dropped their past three.

The Giants come off a 27 point loss at the hands of Richmond last weekend and lost their key midfielder, Stephen Coniglio, in the process. Collingwood also endured some injuries in Round 17 but managed to hold on to their game against West Coast, defeating their conquerors from the Grand Final last year by a point at Perth Stadium.

The respective injury lists may have a big bearing on proceedings and it will be the ability of either side to adapt. Collingwood will be without a couple of important intercepting defenders and it is the Giants Jeremy Cameron that can capitalise up forward. Cameron sits five goals clear on top of the league goal kicking table with 48 majors for the season.

However, the Magpies can get the edge in the midfield and average more disposals and contested possessions that GWS over the course of the season. Look for Steele Sidebottom and Adam Treloar to find plenty of the footy and if the likes of Jordan de Goey and Mason Cox can convert up forward, the Pies can register another important win in their quest to finish in the top four.

Selection News

Stephen Coniglio will miss for GWS with a knee injury, joining the likes of Josh Kelly on the sidelines. Lachie Whitfield will be monitored at training after hurting his ribs last weekend. Jackson Hately is a chance to come back in.

Collingwood lose Darcy Moore to a hamstring. Matt Scharenberg looms as Moore's replacement in the backline. Scott Pendlebury is in some doubt with a finger injury, while Taylor Adams is expected to come back in.

Match Odds

GWS Giants $2.03
Collingwood $1.77

The two sides last met in the Semi Finals of 2018 at the MCG and in a dour affair it was Collingwood that prevailed by 10 points. Steele Sidebottom found plenty of the footy for the winners, while Stephen Coniglio and Lachie Whitfield were among the Giants best.

In Round 2 of last season it was GWS by 16 points at the MCG. Since the Giants entered the league in 2012 it is Collingwood with the advantage at six wins to two. The Magpies have won three of four at GIANTS Stadium but the last time they met at the venue it was GWS that prevailed by three points, courtesy of a late goal to the former gun forward, Steven Johnson.

Prediction and Tips

Collingwood tend to travel well and will head in full of confidence after last week's win in the west.
