  • The Giants and the Bulldogs feature in AFL Round 22 action.
  • Here is our preview of the Sunday afternoon clash.

One of the big games of AFL Round 22 sees the GWS Giants take on the Western Bulldogs at Giants Stadium on Sunday August 18.

First bounce is at 3.20pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Foxtel.

Match Preview

The two sides produced some contrasting results in Round 21. GWS were poor in their 56 point loss to Hawthorn, registering their lowest ever score by kicking just 4.5.29 in freezing conditions in Canberra last Friday.

The following night, the Western Bulldogs scored a remarkable 104 point win over Essendon, kicking 21 goals in succession in that game.

However, it is the GWS Giants that are safely in the finals frame, having registered 12 wins this season, two more than the Western Bulldogs, who are among the chasing pack.

The Bulldogs are likely to finish in the top eight if they win both of their remaining games. A Round 23 date with the Adelaide Crows follows the Giants game.

If Luke Beveridge's side bring the form they displayed last week they will be tough to beat. Josh Dunkley has emerged as a star, while Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Macrae are others that can give the Dogs the upper hand.

But the Giants have a habit of rebounding after their losses this year. Josh Kelly looms as a key inclusion and if they can bring their forwards into the game they can push the Dogs.

Selection News

The Giants injury list is growing and it is Jacob Hopper and Brett Deledio that are the latest casualties. In better news, Jeremy Finlayson and Josh Kelly are expected to be ok.

Caleb Daniel is expected to be available to return for the Bulldogs, while Rhylee West's VFL form warrants consideration.

Match Odds

GWS Giants $1.63
Western Bulldogs $2.25

Stats

GWS have won the last three games between the two sides but they have not met since Round 1 of 2018. That clash went the way of the Giants by 82 points and was held at Canberra.

The last time the Bulldogs ventured to Giants Stadium it was a memorable six point win in the 2016 Preliminary Final. GWS have won six of their seven games at the venue in 2019. The Bulldogs have registered just one win from four interstate appearances this season.

Prediction and Tips

The Bulldogs have the better recent form and represent value at the $2.25
