  • The Hawks and the Suns feature in the final AFL match of Round 22.
  • Here is our preview of the Sunday twilight clash.

Round 22 of the AFL home and away season concludes on Sunday August 18 when Hawthorn and the Gold Coast Suns clash at Marvel Stadium.

First bounce is at 4.40pm and all the action can be seen on Foxtel.

Match Preview

Hawthorn are set to head in as overwhelming favourites for this game after their Round 21 display that saw them defeat finals bound GWS by 56 points, holding the Giants to just 4.5.29, the lowest ever score for the expansion club.

That victory was the ninth for the Hawks this season and another win here will see them keep alive their faint hopes of a finals berth.

Their opponents, the Gold Coast, were smashed by their local rivals, Brisbane, in Round 21, going down to the Lions by 91 points. That loss was their 16th in succession and the struggling club are languishing at the bottom of the ladder.

The Hawks will have enough class here, particularly in the middle of the ground, where Chad Wingard, James Worpel and Liam Shiels have been in excellent form. If the likes of Mitchell Lewis and Luke Breust can convert up forward, an important percentage booster could be on the cards.

For the Suns to pull off an unlikely miracle, they will need Jarrod Witts and David Swallow to continue their good form, while Sam Day and Alex Sexton will both need to find the goals at regular intervals.

Selection News

A lot of the speculation heading into this encounter has centred around Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead. The retiring champions will be given a farewell game. Mitch Lewis has a shoulder issue and may be the man to make way. Jack Gunston missed the GWS win with a hamstring injury and will be out to prove his fitness. Ben McEvoy is a likely inclusion.

Gold Coast escaped with a clean bill of health out of the Brisbane loss but have a stack of players on the sidelines with most of those done for the year. Jack Martin and Peter Wright played in the NEAFL last weekend and will be considered.

Match Odds

Hawthorn $1.06

Stats

Hawthorn have won nine of the 11 games between the two sides including the Round 14 encounter in 2018 by 53 points. Liam Shiels picked up 33 touches in that game, while Jack Gunston and Luke Breust combined for five goals.

In 2017, the Suns enjoyed two wins over the Hawks including one in Melbourne at the MCG. This is the first time the two sides have met at Marvel Stadium.
