  • Here is our preview of the Sunday encounter at Launceston

Hawthorn and Carlton feature in one of two AFL games on Sunday April 28 and the Round 6 clash between the two sides gets underway at 3.20PM.

The key encounter will be played at UTAS Stadium in Launceston, Tasmania, and the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

The two sides feature in the bottom half of the ladder with 13th placed Hawthorn just holding the advantage over 15th placed Carlton, courtesy of registering an extra victory.

The Hawks, who have been hit hard by injuries in the early parts of 2019, have a win-loss record of 2-3, while Carlton are 1-4.

The Blues broke through for a memorable victory in Round 5, their first for the year. That performance saw them defeat the Western Bulldogs by 44 points and it was the first time Brendan Bolton's outfit topped the 100 points in a game since Round 11 of 2016.

On the same weekend, Hawthorn went down to their modern day rivals, Geelong, in a typically hard fought game by 23.

The Hawks coach, Alistair Clarkson, will need to find the right formula in the middle of the ground, especially given the form of Carlton's contested ball winning bull, Patrick Cripps.

The star playmaker is the early favourite for the Brownlow and will have an influence, while it will be interesting to see if the likes of Sam Petreski-Seton and Harry McKay can continue their form from last weekend.

Ben McEvoy, Jaegar O'Meara and James Worpel will need big games for the brown and gold, while Hawks fans will be hoping that Chad Wingard can fire after the star recruit failed to land a goal last weekend.

Selection News

Hawthorn are set to regain Ben Stratton from concussion after the key defender was a late withdrawal last weekend. Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne are also chances of returning. Ben McEvoy will be monitored at training after hurting his hip in the loss to Geelong.

Carlton's Charlie Curnow faces a fitness test at training after missing the Bulldogs game. Matt Kennedy and Liam Stocker are among those with form in the VFL.

Match Odds

Hawthorn $1.28
Carlton $3.45

*correct at the time of writing

Hawthorn have won 15 of the past 16 between the two sides, including last year's Round 18 encounter at Marvel Stadium by 72 points.

The Blues knocked over Hawthorn at the same venue in Round 22 of 2017 by seven points, effectively ending the Hawks slim finals chances that season.

The two sides have met just once at UTAS Stadium and that game was held in Round 19 of 2016, a 19 point win for the Hawks. Hawthorn have won 24 of their past 27 at the venue.

Prediction and Tips

Carlton can get in top at the stoppages but Hawthorn should have the answers, particularly up forward, where they have more firepower.
