  • Hawthorn and Geelong meet in what should be another classic edition of Easter Monday footy.
  • Here is our preview of the Round 5 clash.

Hawthorn and Geelong clash at the MCG in the traditional Easter Monday encounter on April 22.

The Round 5 fixture shapes as a huge one for both sides and all the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Hawthorn have had a mixed time of it so far in 2019. Alistair Clarkson's side have won two of four and in the games they have lost they have blown match winning leads in both of those.

Last weekend they led St Kilda by 26 points in the third term before their mounting injuries took a toll as the Saints steamrolled over the top to win by five.

Geelong are the early pacesetters of the competition and sit on top of the ladder but also come off a narrow defeat, going down to GWS in Geelong by four points last weekend.

The Cats hold favouritism for this contest and can seize the initiative against a Hawks unit that are struggling to cover injuries to key players, particularly in the middle of the ground.

With Patrick Dangerfield, Tim Kelly and Joel Selwood among a star studded midfield group, the Cats can get on top in the clearances and contested possessions. Dangerfield and Kelly were a tad down on their output against the Giants and it will be interesting to see if they can respond.

Hawthorn come into the contest it if they can supply their forwards with enough of the footy. Luke Breust, Chad Wingard and Jack Gunston loom as focal points up forward. That trio combined for just two goals against the Saints but weren't offered much space up forward.

Selection News

Hawthorn had a stack of players that needed treatment in the loss to St Kilda. Jaegar O'Meara was a late withdrawal prior to the game, while James Frawley, Conor Nash, Isaac Smith, Ben Stratton and James Cousins also pulled up with issues. Frawley will definitely miss. Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne are a couple of weeks away.

Geelong have fewer injury concerns and Cam Guthrie is among the possible inclusions for the big game.

Match Odds

Hawthorn $2.96
Geelong Cats $1.36

Stats

The two sides have featured in some unbelievable games over the years and close finishes have been the common denominator. Hawthorn claimed the corresponding fixture last year by one point, before enjoying an 11 point win in Round 21. Geelong won the Round 17 2017 game by three points. .

Four of the past six games have been decided by under a goal. Geelong have won four of the past six between the two sides and since the famous 2008 Grand Final the Cats have won 16 of 23. 15 of those 23 have been decided by 11 points or less.

Prediction and Tips

Geelong will have too much firepower for the injury riddled Hawks.
