The Melbourne Demons take on the Fremantle Dockers at the MCG in the first of three AFL matches on Saturday June 22.

The Round 14 encounter gets underway at 1.45pm and all the action can be seen live on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Melbourne have been the disappointments of 2019. The early premiership fancies have managed to win just three of their 12 games. They have the bye in Round 13. Prior to the rest they went down to Collingwood by 41 points in the Queens Birthday game.

It is a different story for their opponents, Fremantle. The Dockers have been the improvers this year and have won seven of their 12 games. A victory here will see them take another step towards September and their first finals appearance since 2015.

Ross Lyon's side overran Port Adelaide in the closing stages of their Round 13 game, running out 21 point winners. Michael Walters heads in with some electric form after booting six goals, while Nathan Fyfe continues to find plenty of the footy.

That duo should give the Dockers an edge but Melbourne have their share of influential players. Max Gawn will get on top in the ruck, while Clayton Oliver and Angus Brayshaw can match motors with the likes of Fyfe in the middle.

The Demons just need to find an answer to their defensive woes. They have conceded more points on average than any other side this year. Jake Lever and Steven May returned to the line up last time and things should improve in this area in the latter parts of the year.

An interesting sidenote to this game is the appearance of Jesse Hogan for Freo. The key forward faces his former side for the first time and was solid last week with three goals. He may line up on May, the player the Demons effectively gained for the Hogan trade

At the other end of the ground, Fremantle are conceding just 71 points per game and their defensive six will make life hard for Melbourne's forwards.

Selection News

Melbourne's Sam Frost suffered a concussion in the Collingwood game and will be monitored at training. Jordan Lewis, Corey Wagner and Kade Kolodjashnij all played solid games in their return from injury in the VFL recently and will be considered.

Fremantle have no injury concerns out of the Port Adelaide game and are unlikely to make too many changes.

Match Odds

Melbourne $1.67
Fremantle $2.15

Stats

Fremantle have won eight of the past 10 games between the two sides but last year it was the Demons by 54 points at TIO Stadium in Darwin. Clayton Oliver and Max Gawn were the stars for the winners.

In 2017, the two sides played out a thriller at the MCG with Fremantle securing a two point victory in Round 4 of that season. The Dockers ventured to the MCG in Round 11 this year, defeating Collingwood by four points. Melbourne have won just one of their seven games at the venue in 2019.

Prediction and Tips

Fremantle loom as one of the better bets of the round and represent excellent value in the head to head betting. Their recent win over Collingwood at the MCG will hold them in good stead for this and they should have all the answers for a disappointing Melbourne outfit.
