  • Melbourne and St Kilda feature in a big clash at the MCG on Easter Saturday.
  • Here is our preview of the Round 5 fixture

Melbourne and St Kilda square off in AFL Round 5 action and the Saturday April 20 clash gets underway at 4.35PM.

Melbourne have been posted as slight favourites in the early head to head betting and all the action can be seen on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

St Kilda have the superior win-loss record but are outsiders in the betting. The Saints have won three of their four games, while Melbourne have won just one of four.

St Kilda overcame a 26 point third quarter deficit against Hawthorn in Round 4 to defeat the Hawks by five. Seb Ross and Jack Lonie were the stars, while a host of younger players, including Rowan Marshall and Callum Wilkie made their presence felt.

It will be interesting to see if the Saints younger players can back up their form. Marshall faces a tough assignment and will take on Melbourne's twin towers, Max Gawn and Brayden Preuss in the ruck.

The Demons dropped their first three games of the year and were down early on in their contest against Sydney before getting their running game going and overcoming the Swans by 22 points.

If the Preliminary Finalists from last year can hold that form they should be hard to beat. Clayton Oliver, Nathan Jones and Angus Brayshaw can give them the impetus in the middle of the ground, while Christian Petracca and Jake Melksham loom as the finishers up forward.

Selection News

Melbourne's Brayden Preuss will be monitored at training after he hurt his AC joint in the win over Sydney. Jordan Lewis might be ok to make his return from injury, while Jeff Garlett has been playing some good footy in the VFL.

St Kilda's only immediate injury concern is Daniel McKenzie, who suffered concussion in the win over Hawthorn. Paddy McCartin, Dan Hannebery and Jake Carlisle are still a number of weeks away.

Match Odds

Melbourne $1.38
St Kilda $2.90

Stats

Melbourne went winless against St Kilda from 2007 until the start of 2017, when they secured a 30 point win over the Saints in Round 1 of that season. The Demons won the next two games that they played against the Saints following that but went down by two points the last time the two sides met.

That game was in Round 15 last year and St Kilda held out a late challenge to win in narrow fashion. Tim Membrey kicked four for the winner, while Max Gawn and Angus Bradshaw were among the Demons best.

Prediction and Tips

St Kilda are the value in betting markets for this clash.
