  • Who can score the victory in the Round 22 MCG clash?

Round 22 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Friday August 16 when the Melbourne Demons take on the Sydney Swans at the MCG.

First bounce is at 7.50pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Foxtel.

Match Preview

Both sides are out of finals contention and come off losses in Round 21.

After making it to the Preliminary Finals in 2018, Melbourne have been the disappointments of 2019, winning just five games. The Demons sit in 17th spot on the ladder and come off an 18 point loss to Collingwood. That defeat was their fifth on the trot.

Sydney are also on a losing streak and suffered a 47 point defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide, their sixth loss in a row. The Swans are 15th on the ladder with six wins.

This contest shapes as a real flip of the coin. Melbourne closed out last weekend in positive fashion and should enjoy the ascendancy through the middle of the ground with Max Gawn, Angus Bradshaw and James Harmes to provide an influence. But their ball use heading forward will need to improve.

Sydney will look for big games from their rising youngsters in Isaac Heeney, Ollie Florent and Allir Allir, while they will need to convert better after managing just 7.14 in the loss to the Power in Round 21.

Selection News

Melbourne are set to lose Steven May to a hamstring injury. He joins the likes of Tom McDonald on the sidelines and looks done for the year.

Sydney have no injury concerns out of the Port game. It will be interesting to see if Jarrad McVeigh comes up in his bid to return to the seniors before his impending retirement. The superstar forward, Lance Franklin, has been ruled out.

Match Odds

Melbourne $1.90
Sydney Swans $1.90

* correct at the time of writing

Sydney have won seven of the past eight games against Melbourne but the most recent of those went the way of the Demons by 22 points. That was held at the SCG in Round 4 of this season.

In that game, Max Gawn and Nathan Jones starred for the winners, while Jake Lloyd was Sydney's best. The Swans have won their past five over the Demons at the MCG including the Round 21 clash at the venue last year by nine points.

Prediction and Tips

Sydney can get the job done.
