Melbourne Demons v Sydney Swans Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Demons to hold out the Swans on Sunday

  • The Demons and the Swans clash in a huge game at the MCG on Sunday. Here is our preview of the Round 21 encounter.

The Melbourne Demons take on the Sydney Swans in AFL Round 21 and the MCG Sunday clash is a crucial one for both sides finals propositions.

The Demons head in as favourites for the big game that gets underway at 3.20PM. Channel 7 and Fox Sports will broadcast all the action.

Match Preview

Melbourne come off a massive win over the Gold Coast Suns, taking out the Queensland based side by 96 points in Round 20. The Demons are well poised in 4th position on the ladder, four spots ahead of the 8th placed Sydney outfit.

However, both sides have won 12 games this season and it is only percentage that separates them. Melbourne could slip to 8th on the ladder if they go down in this one.

They come up against a Swans side that snuck home by two points against Collingwood last weekend. Lance Franklin kicked six goals, while Tom McCartin booted the match winner in that encounter.

Sunday's game brings together two sides that have plenty of A-grade midfielders but it is Melbourne that lead Sydney in a number of key measures. The Demons rank No.1 in the competition for disposals and hitouts, while they are 2nd for contested possessions and 3rd for clearances.

Sydney are 11th, 15th, 9th and 8th in these categories. Look for Max Gawn to give Melbourne first use of the footy in the middle, while Clayton Oliver and Angus Brayshaw should find plenty of the footy. Sydney's Callum Sinclair will need to be at his best to contain Gawn, while Luke Parker and Josh Kennedy will also need big games.

One of the Swans strengths in recent year has been their defence. Allir Allir and Dane Rampe have been in excellent form of late but it will be interesting to see how they go against a Melbourne outfit that top the competition for points scored in 2018. They are the only side that average over 100 points per game.

At the other end of the ground, Sydney have struggled in comparison, averaging a tick over 80 points, which sees them ranked 12th in this area.

Team News

Melbourne lose Joel Smith to a shoulder injury and Jack Viney won't be back in action until at least the finals. Cam Pedersen is a chance to come in but Michael Hibberd is at least another week away. Sydney are likely to regain Daniel Hannebery.

Stats

Sydney have won the past six games between the two sides with those victories coming at an average margin of 49 points. Four of those six games have been held at the MCG.

Last year it was a 35 point win for the Swans over Melbourne at the home of footy in Round 15. Luke Parker starred, while Lance Franklin kicked four goals. Max Gawn and Michael Hibberd were Melbourne's best players.

Prediction and Tips

Sydney have a great recent record over Melbourne and are a sneaky chance of causing an upset but it is hard to see where their goals will come from outside of Franklin.
