North Melbourne and the Melbourne Demons feature in AFL Round 23 action.

The Saturday August 23 fixture will be played at Blundstone Arena. First bounce is at 2.10pm AEST and all the action can be seen on Foxtel.

Match Preview

The two sides step out for their final game of the 2019 season and it is North Melbourne that will start as favourites on the back of some superior recent form.

The Kangaroos demolished the finals contenders, Port Adelaide, by 86 points in Round 22 and have won nine games for the season, including two of their past three.

On the same weekend, Melbourne's disappointing campaign went from bad to worse as they suffered a 53 point defeat at the hands of Sydney. That loss was the Demons sixth in succession and they will finish the season in 17th spot.

Simon Goodwin's side have struggled defensively and few players can be proud of their seasons. Max Gawn has battled well in the ruck, while Clayton Oliver and Jake Melksham played solid games last weekend.

But with Ben Brown looming large in the goal square for North, this could be another day to forget for Melbourne. Brown kicked 10 goals last weekend. That effort put him ahead of Jeremy Cameron in the race for the Coleman Medal.

Todd Goldstein is in excellent form in the ruck, while Ben Cunnington, Shaun Higgins and Jack Ziebell loom as other key players for the Kangaroos, who will be gunning for their 10th win this season and their seventh under their new coach, Reece Shaw.

Selection News

North Melbourne's Paul Ahern, Jed Anderson and Robbie Tarrant all pulled up with issues out of last weekend and will need to prove their fitness at training.

Melbourne's Max Gawn is in doubt with a hamstring injury but Jordan Lewis is expected to be available and will play his final game.

Match Odds

North Melbourne $1.22
Melbourne $4.15

Stats

The last time the two sides met was in Round 3 of 2018 and Melbourne ended a massive hoodoo in that game by snapping an18 games losing streak against the Kangaroos, a sequence that stretched back to 2006.

In that game, it was Max Gawn that starred, while Ben Brown booted four goals. The two sides have met each other twice at Blundstone Arena and both of those games have gone down to the wire with North winning by four points and five points. The Kangas have won one of their three games at the venue in 2019.
