Match Preview

Port Adelaide ran out of steam in Round 3 against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The Power led by 10 points midway through the final term, but it was all Brisbane from that point onwards as they won by 17 points. It was Port Adelaide’s first loss for the season after two wins to begin 2019.

2017 AFL Premiers Richmond currently sit 14th after two-straight losses. Their most recent a 49-point belting by GWS Giants. Their list of outs continues to grow through injury and suspension.

Port Adelaide have won two of the past three against Richmond at the Adelaide Oval with a 38-point win in 2016, 13-point loss in 2017 and 14-point win in 2018. They should have too much firepower for the Tigers who are missing five key players. Without skipper Trent Cotchin and 2017 Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin, the midfield looks a little depleted. Two key defenders in Alex Rance and Dylan Grimes not down back will help the Power forward line.

Travis Boak has started 2019 in very good form averaging 34 disposals, almost seven marks and seven tackles. Expect him to be hard to stop once again. The Tigers may struggle to stop Justin Westhoff, Connor Rozee and Brad Ebert. Rozee has kicked seven goals from his three games and looks an exciting prospect for the Power.

Team News

Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray and Tom Rockliff will both be tested ahead of the Richmond clash. Rockliff missed the final term against Brisbane with concussion and Gray had a shoulder concern but is expected to line up against the Tigers.

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin will miss 2-3 weeks with a hamstring injury. Dustin Martin will miss one week through suspension and defender Jayden Short damaged ligaments in his arm. They are also without Jack Riewoldt for at least another three weeks and Alex Rance for the season. Bachar Houli is close to a return.

Match Odds

Port Adelaide $1.28
Richmond $3.70

* Correct at time of writing

Port Adelaide have won three of their last four against Richmond, with the only loss coming during the Tiger’s premiership-winning season. They met in Round 12 last year at Adelaide Oval and Port Adelaide won 10.12 (72) to 8.10 (58). The Tigers didn’t have Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin and that will again be the case with the Tigers star suspended after striking GWS’ Adam Kennedy in Round 3.

Looking at the season stats so far, Port Adelaide are averaging 411 disposals compared to Richmond’s 342. They are averaging 10 more Inside 50s than the Tigers also and 16 more tackles.

Predictions and Tips

Richmond has too many big guns missing and Port Adelaide should comfortably beat them at home.
